WILLIE AND BOBBIE NELSON’S GRANDPARENTS. Willie Hugh Nelson was born on April 29, 1933, in the tiny town of Abbott in east-central Texas. His mechanic father, Ira, and his mother, Myrle, divorced when he was only six months old, and his mother left home to work as a dancer, waitress, and card dealer. Willie and his two-years-older sister Bobbie, who would eventually play piano in Willie’s “Family” band, were raised by their paternal grandparents. Young Willie enjoyed hanging out in his grandfather’s blacksmith shop.
