Have you heard The Final Cut from 2004 with "Tigers" added back. That's as close to brickwalled as any Floyd release has ever been. The 2003 Guthrie remaster of DSotM (Redbook layer on the SACD hybrid and common release in EU) is no great shakes either. But really, those are the only two "bad" Floyd CDs I've ever heard.

I have not heard that Final Cut version and as far as the SACD goes, I have not played the redbook layer.

I still say the odds are pretty good that these will sound nice.

Positive thoughts, what the **** am I doing? :D

Can anyone post some photos of the book inside the Discovery box, or describe what's in there?

Well, as discussed in this thread, there have been some stinkers as far as Pink Floyd releases are concerned. Furthermore, the major labels have been known to screw up many a significant reissue. I take nothing for granted coming from the majors.

I remember when that remaster came out, a Pink Floyd site gave it an unconditional thumbs up. The reviewer loved it compared to earlier versions. That reviewer was torn to shreds here.

It's not uncommon for people to sometimes get (unfairly IMO) "torn to shreds" here. That's when this forum isn't such a nice place.

PF's most dynamic album ever, reissued as their most compressed CD ever. What was James Guthrie thinking?

Most of the tracks were normalized to -0dB / 100% peak so that explains the increased loudness.

Here's the waveform for Welcome To The Machine

FWIW, where it hits 0dB it does not actually clip (I zoomed in on the sample to verify), though some software programs may report this as clipping.

  13. Any links to this? I don't recall this negative reception, but if it was 2004 it was before my time here.

Any reviews on Animals? That would have been the first album I would have jumped to, considering I'd expect it to have the most improvement over the lackluster existing versions.

"Obscured By Clouds" would be my choice for one with room for improvement. Unless what we've got now is as good as the master tapes can get.

Smiths22 was responding to a post about Animals, so I guess he was listening to that album.

He didn't say which version(s) he was comparing, though. Same with Wish You Were Here a few posts earlier.
