Luna65 posted this on the AFG forum: I can finally speak of this now (it's been going on for over a year and it's been torturous to sit on my figurative hands)... When James gave his interview last month for the dCS Legends campaign (of which he is a recipient of their award and Sean may be posting the news item I provided him on the site), at the end of it he does verify that he is mixing The Wall for 5.1. The relevant section is around 32 minutes in, but it's an interesting interview all-told. https://dcs-legends-the-other-side-...nds-the-other-side-of-the-glass-james-guthrie
Awesome, but for a moment I thought it was going to be The Wall 1981 live that, just the other day I posted on the Animals thread. I thought I got lucky
Ah the missing piece of the puzzle we were waiting for! Bring on The Wall mega box with the surround mix, the motion picture, the soundtrack, the live film, the live recording, the full demos and the full on works! And please, please, David and Roger, get on with each other to release this beauty!
I have always assumed that the reason that the Wall Immersion box didn't have 5.1 was because the multitracks were lost, so I'm very surprised that they're doing a 5.1 mix so many years later.
James Guthrie discusses this here: Pink Floyd news :: Brain Damage - Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here: SACD review and interviews including James Guthrie And said he was working on an 5.1 SACD of The Wall in 2011!
Didn't he also indicate in an interview like 5 or 6 years years ago he was beginning work on the 5.1 mix of The Wall?
Hmmm, I suppose that it's not out of the question to presume that it's taken this long to do the necessary restoration? If it's an SACD, I'll pre-order it.
Speaking of missing pieces, I hope Guthrie is able to restore all of the edits that were needed to fit the original album on 2 LPs. I'd also appreciate a new hi res stereo mix to go with the surround mix. And will the surround mix be 5.1 or Dolby Atmos?
That would depend on what disc format will be offered. If it's just on SACD then it'll be in 5.1. If it's offered on Blu-ray an Atmos option is possible. My guess is it'll just be offered in 5.1 no matter what the disc format is.
Mother and Run Like Hell were edited. Not sure about other edits. From what I can tell, the live performances on the 1980-1981 tour may have reflected the original lengths.
No, because as I've noted, that mix featured edits made not for artistic reasons but in order to fit the album onto 2LPs. I would like to see the original unedited version of the album made available in both hi-res stereo and surround.
Count me in for wanting a studio version of What Shall We Do Now? restoring to the album itself as per the live version on ITABOT? The vitrol and screams of the track against the animation in the film is potent stuff.
Given the wrangling over the 5.1 release of Animals, is the path to release for any 5.1 of The Wall (either as a standalone release or box set) simpler with Roger's control over so much relating to The Wall? ie, would Roger need David etc to sign off on it still? (Not interested in re-opening RW vs DG, just in understanding what Roger's pre-eminence over The Wall might mean for the 5.1 release)
