Interesting that the CD's you speak of are labeled black on the face of the CD itself. So are the Canadian ones. Please report back Floyd, to see if you're left with the same impression that Syd and I were.

I got a few minutes this morning to listen and there is tape his and the sound is very nice. I will a-b tonight with mofi. You know, as I said I havent a-b these in year and when I did the equipment was simple and to be honest I didn't hear improvement in the mfsl disc but I always figured someday I would have the equipment that I could hear a difference. Maybe the problem is Ive just had a very good version to compare with.

Here is the number on the spine:
CDS 7 46036 8 it is made in Japan BIEM/JASRAC Harvest black lable w/ cd silver printing

Is the US press of 36183 sonically equivalent to the Canadian? In other words, should I want to pick up a used copy of the old USA set??

The old USA set is the same as the Columbia of the same number. Clones.

I do not remember the catalog number anymore, but my first "Wall" CD from the mid 80's had a loud and disturbing "pop" right before the helicopter comes (during the instrumental fade out of Another Brick Part I). This was the main reason I bought the MFSL later on... When I bought the 1994 remaster (Holland pressing), I thought it was even better than the MFSL.

I compared my original Harvest made in Japan black label the Mobile Fidelity and a 1994 (made in Holland remaster) they all sound pretty good I must say. The 94 version is louder so things like acoustic guitars sound nice and clean and jump out, but I find when there are lots of insturments together things seem less defined.
The difference seems less between the mofi and orig. Harvest. The Harvest is quiter and has more hiss (but not too much) I might go as far to say the Harvest may seem more cohesive and possibly warmer. It is hard to say for me as my equipment is not high end.....yet.

I also have the black faced Canadian version as listed here:

    http://pinkfloydcdscanz.bizland.com/WALL/CanadaC2K36183disc1.html

    with a couple of differences...the one on the website is listed as having barcode "0 7464 - 36183 - 2 (barcode on rear cover)" where mine is 0 61213 - 36183 - 02.

Also Matrix info: "Top: C2K-36183/1 MFG BY CINRAM #900930B"
Mine is Top: CK36184 MFG BY CINRAM #881013PP

    Why the differences? Anyone know?

Wish I could help you Scotian, but mine is the same as the the first one. The fact that it has the same catalog number tells me that you have the same mastering except for it's pressed by Cinram.

Thanks Floyd!:) It seems that you have very good listening skills considering that you aren't running a high-end rig. More cohesive.....I like that!

Where can can one order the Canadian version of "The Wall?"

I've looked at a number of web-sites, all seem to offer the '94 Capitol version only or recent Japanese versions.

Probably easier for you would be to buy the USA pressing that was made in Japan for the US. market. The CD set you want has the same catalog # except for the first 3 digits, the last is the same and the faces of the CD's are black.

this cd appears to be the 20th anniversary Austrialian Columbia 489101 2. However, I noticed on the back it was dated 1998 instead of 1994... would this cd still have the same mastering that accompanies the 1994 remaster?

    thanks ~ David

Oddly enough, I just picked up anotherCanadian pressing (C2K-36183). This one is in a regular double jewel case & not the fat-boy double. Also instead of the black face CDs it is the regular silver ones. Another difference is that on the CDs it has printed "Made At SMC". How many versions of this pressing are there?

I have this one as well Scotian. Identicle sound to the black ones. If you want to part with it get a hold of Gavin at http://www.pinkfloydcd.com/ as I know he's looking for an aluminum faced Canadian copy as he wanted to buy mine but I refused.

I was one of those guys who never bothered buying or listening to this album when it came out. I was more into the pop/punk thing (still am) but recently a friend gave me a whole bunch of vinyl which he had burned onto CD-R, including a Canadian pressing of The Wall in VG++ condition.

Apart from being a great record, arguably Pink Floyd's best, this pressing sounds just great.

Thanks Dave, I just sent Gavin an e-mail. Interesting how many different versions of this there are though.

    Hmmm....

This site http://www.pinkfloydcd.com/ is leaving out the Sony/Columbia remaster! The wall was first issued on Columbia, giant red block letters on the spine, regular font w/tracklisting on the back. (If anyone has a mint copy of that title for sale PM me!)

That was the only available version until the MFSL disc and the Shine On boxed set came out. Sony remastered their portion of the Floyd catalog in 97/98 and The Wall was included (it's now out of print, The Capitol disc is the only available copy in the US).

The Columbia remaster used the same remaster as the Shine On boxed set (as far as I can tell). There was a sticker on the outside of the package that said something like "Remastered under the band's supervision". The back of the cd case had the tracklisting in the "Floydian Font". The album cover is slightly smaller than the current Capitol remaster. There were also no character drawings on either disc.

I haven't bought the Capitol remaster yet, so I don't know how it compares to the Sony/Columbia remaster, or the MFSL disc. But I think the Sony/Columbia remaster may have been in print shorter than any other version of the wall (except the MFSL, of course which was only in print for a year).

There was a whole thread I started a couple months back asking if the Sony 1997 and Capitol 2000 remasters were the same or different. We all finally figured out that the Sony remaster and the Capitol remaster were exactly the same despite different/confusing copyright dates. James Guthrie confirmed in an interview that it's the same mastering, they just screwed up the copyright dates on that Capitol remaster. Same goes for Wish You Were Here, Animals, and Dance Songs. Final Cut & Momentary Lapse remasters are still made by Sony.

The thread title is Pink Floyd Capitol vs. Columbia I think.

Tyler, that's because Gavin only has info. about the pressings in which he owns personally.

Scotian, would you please tell Gavin that it was I who sent you to him for me? Thx. Yes, there are a lot of PF: The Wall albums, but infortunately most don't sound as good as this particular pressing of The Wall.

Seems to me that the Sony/Columbia remaster is worth tracking down just for the packaging. I gave my brother his first copy of The Wall before we saw Roger Waters in concert during the summer of 2000. The copy I gave him was the Capitol release. I think the text on the front of the cover of the Capitol remaster is too big. I did like the fact that it came in a slipcase though.

I'm hanging onto my Sony/Columbia disc, while my MFSL disc sounds better there's some sentimental attachment to that disc.

I have the Sony/Columbia remaster and aside from the cover I think it's the same inside. I like the way it sounds too.
