I was in Best Buy and lo and behold, they had an open box DV-563A-S. There was one not in the box as well. The one not in the box (which had the remote) was marked at $74.99. So I asked a sales person about the one in the box (which also has the manual - not like I need it), and they said I could have it. Cool. So when I take it up to the register, it had no open box ticket. It rang up (from the barcode) at $79.99, and the person took $15 off. So I got it at $64.99. Not bad, eh? I figured that I had an old Apex AD-600 in my bedroom, so this was a worthy replacement at $64.99 :)

So my question is: how can I check to see if I have the updated revision to the OS/BIOS? And anyone know any good way to make it multi-region (as I know it can be)?

    Thanks!

I have a 563A too. I think there is a way to see the firmware version on-screen, but I couldn't tell you for the life of me which version is the "updated" one. Another way is the manufacture date stamped on the back of the unit.

Mine was made in January 2004 if I'm not mistaken ... when was the new firmware released?

Go to the Inital settings on the player menu then highlight options then hit the display button on the remote It should read REGION 1 ROM VERSION:1.906_SglStp
That is the upated firmware version

Since I'm not really using it for SACD or DVD-A playback much (if ever - I use my main room for that), I'm not worried about it choking on some SACDs. I just figured since there was updated firmware, I should have it just incase.

You could always pop in a copy of the Steely Dan "Gaucho" DVD-A! :D (Couldn't resist, sorry...)

    Dan, here you go....

If you want to check the firmware level, do the following:
    - turn on the player
    - on the remote press: Home Menu
    - Choose INITIAL SETTINGS
    - press: ENTER
    - highlight: OPTIONS
    - press: DISPLAY
    - in the lower part of the screen the version number will be shown.
    - the updated Firmware version is 1.906.

I have to get a hold of them myself for the update. :sigh:

Guess a bargain is never a bargain - it's going back to BestBuy. I can't get a video display out of the machine. I tried hooking it up to various TVs with no luck. My other players (VCRs/DVD) work fine.

    Oh well.

I took my 563A in for the upgrade yesterday afternoon; when I got home from dropping it off there was a message on my machine telling me it was finished and ready to be picked up! That's gotta be a record!

The guy at my repair center tried to hit me with "I gotta use a graph meter to check out the upgrade" well it took all of might not to laugh in his face...I told him I'd be back in 1 hour to pick-up the player. A couple of Hot dogs from the Jewish deli later I went back and played the Seal disc it played and I was happy. He told me it took 10 minutes for the upgrade.
Hey Styx's....sorry your player doesn't work

No worries. I have a DV-45a in my main room. I figured it was a bargain for my bedroom. No big loss.

Same here. I guess I need to dig up the number and see if I can run it to Long Beach.

I'm just hoping I don't have to send mine across the country to Quebec or Ontario. Hopefully we have a local Pioneer-Authorized repair outlet.
