Absolutely, and Uriel Jones too (as heard on Cloud Nine, Can't Get Next to You, I Second That Emotion, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, and *both* hit versions of Ain't No Mountain High Enough). Also, Jones played on Marvin Gaye's version of "Grapevine," while Benjamin was featured on Gladys Knight & the Pips' version. Richard 'Pistol' Allen was in there somewhere too.

I voted for Levon and Steve Gadd. Levon because he's got such a unique style and great sound. Gadd mainly for his fantastic intro to Simon's 50 ways.

Hal Blaine is great to, but I don't really consider him a rock drummer. To me he's more a kind of big band/jazz drummer.

Honorably mention goes to Jim Gordon for his incredible live drumming on Clapton's Why does love got to be so sad.

  6. IMO, he outdid himself at Tanglewood a year later. This is a long clip, but you won't be bored.

Bill Kreutzmann may not be my favorite drummer as a going concern, but his work during the Dead's 71-74 single drummer period is transcendent.

    Jimmy Chamberlain,
    Alex Van Halen

Both have real chops and played on massive hits. Pretty rare combo.

    Matt Cameron,
    Carmine Appice

Not as technically inclined as the previous two, but still in the top 5%, and played on massive hits that people actually listen to.

  24. Went with others, for one person in particular:

    Clem Burke

... greatest live drumming performance I've ever seen back in the day with Blondie,

His work with the Eurythmics wasn't too shabby either.

    Best Wishes,
    David
