Making Movies is, easily, my favorite.

I own and love them all, but the one that I continue to play often is the sublimely moody On Every Street.

Making Movies, yup. Tunnel Of Love is a genius song. It always seemed to have a "Jungleland" vibe to me.

Same here. I think it's their only perfect album. The songs. The pacing. It just works.

  7. Love Over Gold, but only by the smallest of margins. S/T, BiA, OES are just barely below it, with MM and Communique ever so slightly lower. I have the Alchemy Bluray, but never got the Album.

Also don't quite understand all of the negative comments on Les Boys. First time I heard it, I thought it was OK, but it got better with every listen thereafter.

Just LOVE all of their stuff as well as MK Solo.

Dire Straits 9,5/10 (Dylan+JJ Cale+THAT guitar, magical alchemy)
Communiqué 8,5/10 (similar to the debut, "Angel of Mercy" and "Portobello Belle" aren't that good, slightly less rootsy direction)
Making Movies 7/10 (kind of bland springsteenesque rock, decent songwriting, "Les Boys" could be my favourite track)
Love over Gold 7/10 (kind of eclectic 80's art-rock, interesting in parts)
Brothers in Arms 6/10 (I get bored)
On Every Street 5/10 (I fall asleep)

I have not heard the BBC set yet, but I imagine that it will have no problems with blowing Alchemy away, which despite the wealth of quality material and good playing sounds lifeless and sterile.

I guess the BBC disc is going to please mostly the fans of their first edgy album, while Communiqué supporters should look up a copy of the grey-area Live in Germany recorded on Feb 16, 1979 in Cologne. This intimate club set successfully transmits a laid-back, country-side vibe known from their second LP, with a lot of tasty twin-guitar interplay in a pretty good sound quality.

Their debut album remains one of my all time favorite CDs. "Sultans of Swing" is epic. Brothers In Arms is a close second.

That looks like something I should be trying to find. :righton:

And I agree with what you say about Alchemy... when I bought it, I expected to be blown away (it was about a year after BIA was released) but as much as I tried to get into it, I felt it was lacking, somehow. So the Live At The BBC one, is just what I wanted.

Because Sultans Of Swing got so much airplay it made me shut down on wanting to listen to anything further by the band. A few years I "discovered" Dire Straits. Better late than never, as the saying goes. I'm sorry the band was so short lived!

gregorya I approve of this message

I pick the debut followed by Brothers in Arms. As others have mentioned, there is strong material on every album (and On Every Street ;)) but for me, the debut was one of those "came out of nowhere" moments and you can't make a first impression twice.

Brothers in Arms was a reinvention of sorts, and I absolutely love the title track. I saw them on the On Every Street tour and Brothers on Arms was the encore, it was magical. ;)

"Love Over Gold". I´m not really a fan, but I think all the four first albums had moments of greatness. Not so sure about "Les Boys", though...
