This poll points to choose the favorite records among the most acclaimed albums from 1966. You'll be allowed to select up to 5 albums from the list.

The confection of the list was based on these three sources:
    100 Greatest Albums of 1966
    Acclaimed Music
    Best Albums of 1966

The first condition to include an album in the poll was being in the Top 30 of at least two of those three lists. Then the two highest positions of each album were averaged to determine the relative order. In this way, the Top 25 albums of the resultant list were selected as nominations for the poll.

NOTE: If you think that one or more essential albums you would have selected are not in the list, then you can choose less than 5 options and name those records you wish they had been here.

Jefferson Airplane Takes Off would have made my list had it been included in this poll.

That's one of my very favorite albums from 1966 as well; but it wasn't included in the poll because it was not a Top 30 album in any of the lists from the used sources.

  8. Impossible task, but...my votes went to-
    ~"Revolver" by The Beatles
~"Blonde On Blonde" by Bob Dylan
~"Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme" by Simon & Garfunkel
~"Sounds Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel
~"Pet Sounds" by The Beach Boys

The four most honorable mentions are great on the level of the 5 vote getting choices-
    The Kinks
    The Byrds
    The Rolling Stones
    The Mamas & The Papas

    Two Dark Horse greats-
    The Monks
    The 13th Floor Elevators
    * prefer their debut, "Love" by Love (also from '66 & my fave album by them), to "Da Capo" (which is terrific too).

Help! and Rubber Soul are in the previous poll and Revolver is in this poll; there you have Yesterday And Today, albeit in fragmented form...

East West makes the top 5 for me! Love it to pieces!

Oh, I picked Pet Sounds, too...so I could stay a member of the forum.

I was and am Never a fan of Beach Boys albums and even Pet Sounds. I admire their influence, but to me they have only a handful of true classics of which 3 of them on Pet Sounds.....( ok 2 hand Full, including their Surf Songs)

I think what we're measuring here is the number of classic rock fans vs jazz fans on the SHF.

    Some thoughts:
    - I've always thought it was kind of interesting that, after all four acts released multiple albums a year in '64 and '65, the Beach Boys, Beatles, Stones and Dylan all only released one record in 1966.
    - Do people pop into these types of polls just to vote for the Beatles and then run out again without even posting?

Both S&G albums and, of course, The Byrds. Haven't heard 17 of them which shows some pretty serious gaps in my knowledge.

Not knocking the poll which is nice & extensive but my favourite album from 1966 is Gordon Lightfoot's debut.

As a jazz fan, I must say, most of the albums I return to most often that were issued that year aren't on the above list, those would include:

Sun Ra - The Magic City
    Roscoe Mitchell - Sound
    Cecil Taylor - Conquistador
Albert Ayler - In Greenwich Village

Of the above list the albums I like best are Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds, though there are a lot of other fine albums on there obviously.
