Eh, great tune made more great by the direct, rocking mono mix. Like many mid 60s stereo mixes, the rhythm section takes a back seat to the trickery.

    I wouldn't say 'mind-blowing', though....
    Just 'funky, bouncy, and awesome'!

I'm torn about this one. Although I think it is a great song I don't think it is as weird as I prefer my Syd Era Floyd and Syd Solo.
It is very "normal" for a Pink Floyd song, almost like a straight ahead rock song. It borders on almost being a typical 67 psych song. The kind of song you hear on those psych compilations like Nuggets by bands that have one really great pscyh song but nothing else.

    I dislike it.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but I don't like the first album (Interstella Overdrive and Astronomy Domine are pretty cool).

I can understand why some fans dislike “Piper’s” quirky sound. It’s not for everyone for sure.

Not just a great song, but an influential one.

Paul Weller took elements from it for one of his best Jam songs, "Dreamtime." The most obvious part is the "Oh no! " (at 1:01). But the unorthodox ascending chord progression that precedes it was also most likely influenced by the Syd song.

Excellent song and I like the raw/refined guitar tone and performance from Syd. Richard's organ accompaniment is in perfect tandem with what Syd and the band were about on this extraordinary debut. This one has a special place within the Barrett led Floyd. :righton:

I think the lyric places it sheets above most nuggets era psy-rock.

    Brilliant song.

Worked it up with my "garage" band recently and it's usually a 'hit' with the crowd when we play out.

Here's a solo/electric version I recorded by myself during the peak of covid "shelter in place"

Obviously a bit rough around the edges.... lyrics not 100% correct.... but it is quite fun to play and sing!

It's on the best Pink Floyd album, an integral part of the flow on an masterpiece that cannot be divided into smaller parts than the sum of the whole!

The mono mix is the best, but this fan made stereo mix is excellent as well!

Killer cover version by True West back in the day. They got lumped in with the Paisley Underground but I hear more Television there than anything else.

Seeing Nick Mason do this live made me realize the kick drum is practically inaudible in the original version. And I prefer it that way! Prominent kick changes the feel too much.

The band's name is Lucifer Sam ?
Not sure - it only says “Lucifer Sam live” and there's no info in the video description. One of the guitarists is playing a white Vox Phantom , which is cool enough in itself !

Mind blowing, but not my fave Floyd song, or even my fave 1967 Floyd song. Not in a world where Candy and a Currant Bun exists.
