    Blue Sky Mining

    Simply because these were the albums I first heard upon their original release. I backfilled later (the early albums and EP's were hard to find in Canada until the band's success with Diesel & Dust), and bought the rest as they came out.

    And... you only let me vote for 4! :):)

    My four, in no particular order.
    10-1, Head Injuries, Place without a postcard, E&S&M.
    Having grown up with the band I'm partial to the earlier heavier stuff, that being said they were still very much at the top of their game thru E&S&M. I picked E&S&M because it is easily their must under rated album.

    Hey, anyone know if they're planning on releasing some of those later LPs singularly on vinyl?

    If I understand correctly, they're putting them all in a larger complete LP set, but all I'm really in need of is a copy of Earth & Sun & Moon.

    Acoustic versions of some classics and 4 new songs,of which Say Your Prayers is the strongest IMHO.... interesting stripped back arrangements on 2 EASAM songs....
    Key tracks...Say Your Prayers,The Dead Heart with yadaki (didgeridoo) and Tin Legs and Tin Mines...check 'em out!

    I was visiting Boston, before I moved here in 1983 or so, could be '82, and saw them at the long gone Channel club in Boston, supporting "10, 9, 8..." and they were unbelievable!!! Still my fave!!!!

    Head Injuries - Power, passion, and prowess all the way through. Naked flaming bus to Bondi, y'all. A++

    Red Sails - I've cooled on this since the days it initially blew me away, but favorite moments remain, like the stunning final stretch of Shipyards, the evocative chords of Sharman's Boxers, and the "when will I be yours / when will I be mine" segment of Bells & Horns, among others. Gifford played Chapman Stick on this album, too. :righton:

    Earth & Sun & Moon - Earthy as per '90s retrospection of the '60s and '70s, delivered with Oils vitality. Great grooves, classic sounds, melodic appeal...plus that wondrous ending to Now or Never Land.

    Breathe - Objectively, it's under-recognized. Subjectively I love it so so much.

    I notice Capricornia isn't rating much top 4 attention...
    just a shout out to a few tracks like Tone Poem ,Mosquito March and Luritja Way in particular amongst others to those who are interested in sampling this late career return to form album (IMHO)
    Also,the closing track is one of my favourite Oils tracks,atonal and discordant vocals and all a very poignant end to their recorded output (thus far!)

    I found this quote recently. Probably my favourite album of theirs and certainly the most sonically interesting.

    "I think if you love the Oils, then you love 10 to 1,” says Moginie. “There’s something about the sound of it that doesn’t sound like any other bands from that time. The dynamics of it are mercurial and curly. Diesel is a very clear record and it sounded good on the radio, but 10 to 1 was wilder. It was more...”

    He pauses for a moment to try to find the right word. Then it comes to him.

    “It was more us.”"

    Red Sails is my favorite. Every song is fantastic. 10 to 1 a close second. Recently gave a listen to the Capricornia DTS surround disc. Wow, it is stunning!

    So hard to choose. I went with 10-1, Diesel and Dust, Blue Sky Mining, and Earth, Sun, Moon. What a great set of albums.

    But everything is great. The later period albums should not be ignored. Breathe is just beautiful, and Redneck Wonderland has some amazing songwriting on it. Plus the b-sides and mixes from that album are killer. The Oils can do no wrong.
