Jim McCarty in Cactus, "Parchman Farm". Crazy guitar throughout the song.
These guys were on fire on this LP.

I remember getting the Rick Derringer Live album about ten years ago. I think he may have still been a teenager when it was recorded, and it blew my mind. Such great playing.

Interesting that we call these guitar 'solos' when it's more of a case of the lead guitar taking a melody over the rest of the instruments playing a groove/riff. A true 'solo' would be Jimmy Page on 'Heartbreaker', literally everything stops and it's just guitar.

He goes back 12 years before that with The McCoys hit "Hang on Sloopy" (guitar and vocals). The bass player was Randy Hobbs who also was in the White Trash link I posted, great players both.

I saw Rick a few years ago and he did an off the cuff version of "Over The Rainbow" solo, chordal melody stuff. Better than Jeff Becks version I heard live a bit before that. Very overlooked player.

That may be the technical definition. But the songs presented here fit the common usage.:goodie:

More technically correct is to call them lead melodies, even if it's just a few seconds.

    Ozark Mountain Daredevils- "Jackie Blue"

There is an underlying lead guitar part in most of the song but there are two simple, yet effective, guitar "solos" at 1:40 and around 3:33 or earlier if you count the lead in.

He played lead guitar on a number of the early Steely Dan and Alice Cooper albums also. A talent.

That's some good Derringer trivia right there, for me. I have never heard it. :righton:

I have always loved Ace's solo on this song. Here, it starts around 1:45 and again around 2:45.

Bireli Lagrene with his band at the North Sea Jazz Festival playing Django's Troublant Bolero.

Main guitar solo starts at about 1:46 in. Tasteful, subtle genius personified.

About 2:22 to 3:35, and then to close out the song.

Didn't see this one, may have missed it - master class in a guitar intro, plus a nice solo later on:
