The two solos here are about as good as it gets - they just cut straight to the bone. No other recorded version ever quite captured the magic of the original.

"Marquee Moon" quite rightfully is the signature Verlaine solo, but this one might be my favorite by him.

When it comes to pure singing tone, Peter Green and Mark Knopfler are at the top of my list.

Although there isn't a "solo" here, the understated back and forth with the organ and other guitarists is so, so sweet, starting at 2:00.

Richard Thompson on Fairport Convention - 'Poor Will And The Jolly Hangman' (1970).

This is the remixed 1975 version with Richard and Linda vocals in place of the slightly wonky RT and Swarbrick vocals of the original track.

The solo (3.28 onwards) is the original. Incredible. Hair raising.

I'm gonna get ripped for this one (cuz there are so many U2 haters on this MUSIC forum than there should be), but Edge is pretty damned good on the solo at 3:17.

(Yes, I know it's a pre-arranged set of notes that he played every night, but the OP said nothing about it having to be improvisation.)

Anyone who's the fan of Jimi's mind-melting lead work on "Machine Gun" would do well to check this out.

A clever guitar part that works thoroughly well within the song, like the 1970 studio version of "Rock & Roll" by the Velvets or the 1975 studio "Be-Bop-A-Lula" by John Lennon featuring Jesse Ed Davis is what gets me going. I appreciate the Satriani or Zappa school of long solos, but precision and organization (for me) is every bit as important.

He forged his own style and not many guitar players can say that and he's certainly become more technically proficient over the years. His stuff in the documentary with Page and that other guy was very interesting.

  14. This whole Suite Judy Blue Eyes is great, but the fireworks begin at the 5:00 mark- to the end.

Stills manages to turn his guitar into a fiddle sounding pitchfork.

    Enjoy.
