I’ll be moving into my new Colorado home over the course of the next week. I am contemplating knocking down a wall and connecting two adjacent rooms. One room is 11’ x 11’ and the other is 11’ x 15’. I’m conflicted about the expense vs separating my music and listening areas. I could let it be and have my records/CDs in the smaller room, but I’m not sure how I’d like that. I think I’ll try to make do with the current layout and see if it has to change.
It may not really matter, but check out amroc - THE Room Mode Calculator If your ceiling is 8' the 11 x 15 room seems pretty ideal (the 'X' falls within the recommended 'zone' anyway). Plus of course Cardas Room Setup Guide and other setup stuff, but maybe you know all this. Congratulations on the new room/house! Enjoy!
Credit to you for the inspiration. As @jonwoody pointed out, knowing my track record, we'll see. Gotta say though, these small speakers are special. That's the way they're designed to sit. I had the same thought, but they only go together one way.
That's pretty much what I've said to a couple of local friends. They disappear so listening to the musicians instead of listening to the speakers.
A couple years ago we were living as empty nesters in a pretty standard 4 bedroom house. I was using one of the bedrooms for listening. I seriously considered taking out the wall between it and the adjoining room which would've given me a 22x13 room. We were in one of those neighborhoods which was designed for people to raise families so I was afraid of hurting resale value. Had that not been a concern, I would've done it.
If I were you, I would try to see how the sound is in the 11x15 room. It might just be good. If you knock down the wall, would you get a 22x15 or a 26x11 room? Based on my own room and what I here from others with long and narrow rooms, they are generally to be avoided.
It would create an 11' x 26' room. My plan was to have my CDs along one of the 11' walls with some wraparound, my system in the middle of a 26' wall and my records along the opposite 11' wall from the CDs.
Is this with your Cornwall's? This might put your seating position up against the back wall which is something I would want to avoid. In your 11'x15' room you could put your Cornwall's in the corners angled at your listening chair which you could have some distance away from the back wall which would smooth out the bass and open up the midrange and highs. You could locate your components or CDs along the back wall and make a more efficient use of space. I did something similar in my 11.5'x13' room with my speakers on the 11.5' wall and have my sofa 4' from the back wall with my components and records behind it and I also have records on the rear of one of the side walls and CDs on the other. The only real drawback is a rather long run of speaker cable which I compensated for by using a large gauge of high quality cable.
Changes brought about due to working/schooling from home. Surprisingly the very basic adjustments built in to the speakers result in better measurements than where they were traditionally placed. Baffles me as it flies in the face of so many “best practices” bandied about regarding speaker placement.
Looks good! It's a bit hard to tell though where are the speakers placed? It looks like just off the desk but that could be an optical illusion. Also where were they before?
Kind of hesitant to share mine after seeing some of the kit posted. I enjoy it and when married you accommodate the better half.
Their acoustic axis (between the tweeter and the midrange) was 32” from the front wall, 29” from the side wall and 38” from the floor. Now it’s 20” from the front wall, 27” from the side wall and 47” from the floor. Listening position was 80” from the front wall and is now 62” from that wall.
