Hum... I'm beginning to think my "Fame EMI" pressing of Wings Wild Life has pre-emphasis. My version of EAC cannot detect PE, so I'm going by hear. What do you think? First is the straight copy of the Wild Life track, then the version with de-emphasis applied. http://rapidshare.com/files/408293972/04._Wings_-_Wild_Life.flac http://rapidshare.com/files/408293973/04._Wings_-_Wild_Life__DeEmph_.flac
For the list above, my copy of the New Order disc (Low Life, FACD100) is labelled "Made in Japan" and has Japanese script in the inner ring.
Definitely possible (even likely/probable) IMO. EQ analysis of de-emphed file shows about a 1/5-1 db increase in bass frequencies, and a dramatic 6-7 db decrease in treble frequencies...
I agree -- the sibilants and cymbals are painfully brittle on the non-de-emphasized version. Any chance you could download an earlier EAC and check for the PRE flag that way? Either way, if you could post the catalog and matrix numbers of your version that'd be really helpful.
I can't check with EAC, having no PC near hand. I really think it has Pre-Emph. It would sound pretty weird for a "standard" CD. Wings - Wild Life - Fame EMI Made in W-Germany CD-FA 3101, matrix: SONOPRESS B-9590/CDM 7520172 A The CD lalso has an incorrect SPARS code [DDD].
I'm trying it at the moment with the old EAC 0.95 prebeta 3 (which is able to detect PRE in the subcodes - and did for my Genesis, Ultravox, Richie and McCartney). But a problem I wasn't aware of: it doesn't detect any CD in Windows 7. I'm checking the compatibility modes now. Does anyone have a solution??? I don't think my PC rip of the FAME Wild Life sounds like Preemphasis, but I'm very curious to check the CD... Martin

I've loaded the list into a table on my CD wiki. It's sortable and I'm trying to include more details, including matrix codes, where the PRE flag actually appears on the disc (TOC and/or audio subcodes), and exceptions where necessary.
I like this idea. Just saw this thread: http://stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?p=971974#post971974
Finally, my EAC 0.95 pb3 works with Windows 7. The result for Wings Wild Life (CD-FA 3101 CDM 7 52017 2): Matrix Number is: CDM 7 52017 2 AR 3:1:3 EMI Swindon definitely no preemphasis! I've used the "detect TOC manually" option, which still detects "Pipes of Peace" and "Genesis s/t" correctly. As expected, they sound exactly the same on my system, when played back with my Pioneer CD-Player or from ripped FLAC with WinAmp. Martin
My pressing is made in W-Germany by Sonopress... maybe they screwed up the PE tag. Anyway, I'm positive my CD needs de-emphasis. Could you please upload the first minute of Wild Life (track 4) like I did to compare the sound?
I'm just downloading your original file to check if it is identical. But what does your CD-Player do with this disc?? Can't you compare if sounds like your filtered or your unfiltered file? Martin
As expected, our discs are digitally identical. The drums are on the bright side here, of course.... but apart from that I've always understood why this CD is a forum favourite. And as there are no PE flags, me and at least a lot of the others never listened to it through such a fliter. All the real PE-albums I own sound are lot more shrill undecoded... Martin
My CD player (Cambridge 640C v2) does not do De-Emphasis, so I have to decode all my PE CDs with a computer. I still think they forgot to put the PE flag in the TOC when pressing the disc. The sound has an insane amount of air and top end without DE. But I agree, this CD sounds incredible DE or not!
For your consideration, track 3 Love Is Strange, straight from the Fame EMI disc, and then with De-Emphasis applied: http://rapidshare.com/files/408971273/Love_Is_Strange.flac http://rapidshare.com/files/408971274/Love_Is_Strange_-_De-Emph.flac Files can only be downloaded 10 times...
Does anyone have a different Wild Life that they can compare to the FLACs Plan9 is posting? That would nail it down pretty definitively, I think.
I've got one addition from my CD's. Deep Purple - Machine Head - CDP 7 46242 2 - EMI UK EAC tells me right away in the start that the CD has pre-emp, if that's needed info. I didn't know for sure my CD was original EMI from 1986, but I guess it is from those years since it has pre-emphasis. What matrix code? EMI is known to have released multiple masterings of some titles under a single catalog number.
"CDP 7-46242-2. @ 1:3:3.R", that's all what's printed in the matrix. I've tried to google it a few times but I've never managed to get more info of my copy.
