Budget is $200 Million + a large marketing campaign, I'll bet the studio is on full panic mode right about now....a $50 million domestic opening is not going to cut it.
First weekend #'s for Transformers Domestic: $60.5 million International: $110.0 million Total: $170.5 m Estimated international debuts for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts include: China - $40.0M Mexico - $7.3M Indonesia - $5.3M Peru - $5.0M S. Korea - $4.4M France - $3.8M U.K. - $3.8M
From: Box Office Report Estimated Weekend Box Office Top 7 for June 9 - June 11, 2023 1. Transformers - $60.50M 2. Spider-Man - $55.43M 3. The Little Mermaid - $22.79M 4. Guardians Vol. 3 - $7.03M 5. The Boogeyman - $6.92M 6. Fast X - $5.20M 7. The Super Mario Bros. - $2.12M - Guardians crossed $800 million worldwide - Spider-Man is at $390 million w/w, the first one made $384.2 million total in its run. - Fast X - $652.8 million w/w - already released on home digital, China accounts for $137.5 million of the total
While disappointing Transformers getting the top spot for the weekend prevented a huge domestic embarrassment. Like Fast X and The Little Mermaid, these are more summer disappointment rather than straight up bombs. They might break even, but not by a lot and there’s no indication from any of the studios involved that they plan to change course even with the muted reaction.
Curious to see how Flash will do and if the criminal behaviour of the main actor will damage the box office results.
It won't. That appears to be essentially forgotten - not that the general public really ever knew about it anyway. Miller's just not famous enough for his behavior to reach the Average Joe.
Well, that's good since here were the previous grosses: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1: $773.3 million Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: $869 million Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $806.1 million (and rising) So I'd say that #3 actually has a chance of making more money than any of them -- and I'd say good for Marvel. I thought it was a film with a lot of heart, and I think they tried very hard to make something more than just a big VFX movie with a lot of action scenes. I'm more concerned about the Flash movie's reviews being decidedly mixed. I read one outright bad review today, and I don't think the actor's bad behavior had anything to do with it. All their objections were story-related issues.
Disney Moves Avatar 3, Star Wars, Avengers Movies – The Hollywood Reporter ‘Avatar 3’ Pushed a Year to 2025, Two ‘Star Wars’ Movies Head for 2026 and ‘Avengers’ Films Delayed Disney made a slew of high-profile changes and additions to its theatrical release calendar, including adding a date for 'Moana,' moving up 'Deadpool 3' and pushing the fourth and fifth 'Avatar' films three years each. Disney’s film empire has reimagined its theatrical release calendar in a major way. The studio announced a slew of changes on Tuesday, led by the news that it is setting two Star Wars movies for 2026 and pushing back Avatar 3 by a year, from December 2024 to December 2025. Additionally, Avatar 4 will now hit theaters in December 2029, followed by Avatar 5 in December 2031 — meaning 4 and 5will now open three years later than previously announced. Other highlights: Ryan Reynolds fans will be happy to learn that his untitled Deadpool 3 will now open in theaters on May 3, 2024, instead of Nov. 8, 2024. Also on the Marvel Studios front, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been pushed a year to May 1, 2026. The feature has embattled Jonathan Majors attached in the lead role. The actor is facing assault charges in New York court. The follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, has also been pushed a year, to May 7, 2027. Disney’s already announced live-action Moana has received a theatrical release date of June 27, 2025. 20th Century has added another installment in the Alien franchise, dated for Aug. 16, 2024. Filmmaker Fede Alvarez is behind the feature, which stars Cailee Spaeny. The studio has also added Rami Malek thriller The Amateur to Nov. 8, 2024. Lucasfilm has not had a Star Wars feature in theaters since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. At April’s Star Wars Celebration, it teased its theatrical future, including a feature to star Daisy Ridley, another from The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni and an epic from James Mangold. On Tuesday, Lucasfilm moved a previously dated Star Wars movie from December 2025 to May 22, 2026. The Ridley feature is furthest along in development and is likely to open on that date. And curiously, Lucasfilm revealed in Tuesday’s announcement that it has added a new Star Wars feature for just five months later: Dec. 18, 2026. (Another Star Wars movie is staying on its current date of Dec. 17, 2027, thus wasn’t mentioned in the announcement). Marvel Studios made a few other small tweaks to its schedule. Captain America: Brave New World has moved back around three months to July 26, 2024. Thunderbolts has pushed five months to Dec. 20, 2024. Blade likewise moved five months to Feb. 14, 2025, while Fantastic Four moved back three months to May 2, 2025. Multiple Marvel movies, including Blade and Thunderbolts, opted to delay going into production amid the writers strike. Below are the changes in full: Captain America: Brave New World previously dated on 5/3/24 moves to 7/26/24 Thunderbolts previously dated on 7/26/24 moves to 12/20/24 Untitled Alien Event Movie dated on 8/16/24 Blade previously dated on 9/6/24 moves to 2/14/25 Untitled Deadpool Movie previously dated on 11/8/24 moves to 5/3/24 The Amateur (20th) is now dated on 11/8/24 Avatar 3 (20th) previously dated on 12/20/24 moves to 12/19/25 Fantastic Four previously dated on 2/14/25 moves to 5/2/25 Avengers: The Kang Dynasty previously dated on 5/2/25 moves to 5/1/26 Moana is dated for 6/27/25 Untitled Star Wars previously dated on 12/19/25 moves to 5/22/26 Avengers: Secret Wars previously dated 5/1/26 is now dated on 5/7/27 Untitled Star Wars is now dated 12/18/26 Avatar 4 (20th) previously dated on 12/18/26 moves to 12/21/29 Avatar 5 (20th) previously dated on 12/22/28 moves to 12/19/31
Could this be reaction to the less than stellar results of recent MCU movies, with the exception of GOTG3?
I wouldn't be surprised if this announcement is to give Cameron time to do "The Last Train from Hiroshima" prior to finishing A4 and start A5.
Re: delay of MCU movies I had to look up who Jonathan Majors is, hadn't heard of him. He's supposed to be the lead "Avenger" now?
There's also been a lot of chatter about VFX houses experiencing crunch trying to get all the Marvel projects out; that plus the departure of Victoria Alonso led Feige to say earlier this year that things are going to slow down some: https://ew.com/movies/kevin-feige-marvel-phase-5-exclusive-interview/
There is a new deadline article which, in relation to these delays, states that Disney are very concerned with making the films better all round as they are concerned with the bad reactions to the films both on a technical level and basic storytelling. So you are right.
Not to rag on thise VFX studios but the crunch time is noticable. Some effects in recent Marvel movies looked pretty bad. Not their fault but certainly a sign that things need to change. Not only so effects-driven movies look a bit better but also for the health of the VFX artists that are working their butts off.
Yup. A lot of people noticed that the VFX in Guardians was miles ahead of Quantumania, which itself seemed to be of varying quality throughout.
