Prince - Purple Rain Deluxe Edition 2017

Mine should arrive tomorrow. Disappointing to hear that the remaster is brickwalled.

 

It's definitely brickwalled, even if disc 3 fares better than the other two.
I find the sound of this remaster more akin to the kind of maximalism that Prince wanted to reach on this album. Not only it doesn't annoy me, but I can say I like it.

 

Correct. BlueGangsta doesn't specify what is remixed. See? What he wrote could be taken two ways.

 

Visually seeing a waveform, especially like that one has never let me down . I'm going to pass...

Well, I guess the only reason to get this is for the unreleased stuff now. Thanks for the warning. I can save some money. If I didn't have this album already, that would be one thing. But, since I do, I can hopefully buy the unreleased stuff as FLACs on 7-digital.

 

As usual Amazon Germany sent it to me a day earlier - it arrived this morning.

I'm listening to the remastered CD right now and am disappointed.

That's true but on the other hand there's way too less treble - it sounds hollow.

The booklet says "Remastered by Prince" ... nothing about a remix.

And there's a tape drop out at the beginning of "Erotic City" 12".

Not impressed.

Oh damn it, the 12" of Erotic City is a masterpiece. How could WB have let this happen?

 

I don't recall hearing the 12" version previously...are we sure that isn't on previous versions and on the master?

That sucks. That annoys me more than brickwalling...I expect brickwalling in 2017 as it's not a mistake and is a conscious decision whereas a dropout not on the master is a just a screw up.

That is the 2nd time I've seen that mentioned so far, that above all for me is really disappointing out of all of it.

The remaster of the original LP though is the least interesting thing about this edition. For me anyway, I find the versions I already have sound good to me. Maybe this is why it didn't come out again all those years ago, as the remaster was a bit crap. As it stands it would still need to be released though, as Prince worked on it, so historically it has some sort of relevance.

I'm looking forward to giving it a good go on vinyl tomorrow. Again it wouldn't surprise me that this is another vinyl win over the CD.

 

I suppose being as Prince remastered it this is how he wanted it to sound.

 

The original vinyl sounds really great.
And even if you are not into vinyl ... the first edition of the CD ain't bad either.

 

Let's be realistic: there's been every reason since this was announced to think that it would be a fiasco. Personally I'm looking forward to watching the DVD ... anything salvagable on the audio discs will be a bonus.

 

I own an original 12" copy and there is no dropout. So frustrated about this. The 12" of Erotic City is in my top five Prince songs.

This was supposed to be great.

 

I haven't received my copy yet, and I'm also one of the unlucky that Amazon says "expected delivery June 29-30" even though I'm a Prime customer. Regarding "Erotic City," that is a bummer about the reported dropout At least I still have my old German CD single, which sounds pretty good.

 

That's very annoying. It's not like they haven't had time to get their act together with this release.

 

Ouch! Absolutely no need for a reissue-campaign if this is the result.

Happy to see though that the dynamic range of the previously unreleased material (IMO the main attraction of this set) is a little better.
