All seven and we'll watch them fall They stand in the way of love And we will smoke them all With an intellect and a savior-faire No one in the whole universe Will ever compare
it'll be fantastic when they start producing and releasing legit docs on Prince, and stop with these tributes.
Saw my one and only Prince gig 57 days before he passed. An amazing night, and it's funny how the little things stay with you. For me, it's how mournful his solo piano 'Little Red Corvette' felt then, and still feels. I listen to the Tidal release of 'Little Red Corvette/Dirty Mind' from the Opera House gig and it chills me. I get transported back to my seat where I sat in stone silence, unable to comprehend that after decades of wishing and hoping, I was finally in the same room as a genius. *The* genius of my life. I also think back to waking that morning to the news that dropped me and hearing that LRC in my head. The soundtrack to the highs and lows of 2016, that great bad f***er of a year, that's for sure.
I was lucky enough to see Prince a few times. They were some of the best times I'd ever had (with my clothes on).
It's hard to imagine it's been 4 years. It doesn't seem it's been that long. What an amazing once in a lifetime talent.
Only 4 years. Wow it feels like longer! 4 Prince years usually equals 3 albums, 1 double album and 3 tours in that time-span
Prince - Purple Rain - 2017 KG vinyl remaster. 4 years since Prince died - WOW. gone so fast - miss him dearly. RIP musical legend.
To honour his death I ordered the purple 2LP of 3121. Will be delivered tonight. … and I pre-ordered The Rainbow Children vinyl, planned for release at the end of May.
Prince's official twitter account once tweeted a link to Field Music's "The Noisy Days Are Over" from their 2016 album "Commontime". Now, to mark 4 years since Prince died, Prince fan David Brewis of the band Field Music has (under the name 'School Of Language') put out 5 Prince influenced songs as a tribute to the purple one. Link here: I Could Have Loved U Better, by School of Language "It’s four years since Prince left us. Over these past few exceedingly odd weeks, I’ve been thinking about him; picturing him alone in the studio, running a drum machine through guitar pedals, layering vocals, churning out song after song, maybe with an engineer looking through the glass but nevertheless in a bubble of isolation. I couldn’t bring myself to cover his songs. I love the complete package - the playing and the production and the imperfections - just too much to tinker with. But I thought that maybe I could keep myself on the level by writing my own Prince songs. Maybe a little batch which would have been left in the vault back in ’81 because they sounded “too Prince” and he’d already moved on. So this is my little tribute. It’s a little bit silly, I’ll admit. But I made these little lockdown songs with a great deal of love, to repay a great deal of inspiration. And I had a lot of fun doing it."
I'm not one to jump on into the "those who are running the estate have no effin' clue on how to do anything" arguments, but given the Tribute concert performed so well that they're re-airing the mofo, it's mind-boggling that there isn't any new Prince product that came out on 4/21 that could be heavily promoted during the broadcasts.
Wasn’t the Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone reissues supposed to be out in April? Maybe that was their plan. But due to the coronavirus craziness they got pushed to the end of May.
It did increase cataloge sales: Prince Grammy Salute Spikes Sales for the Purple One I think it would have been very tastleless to promote commercial product during a tribute show on the anniversary of his death.
Well, in my opinion, that's part of the Prince aesthetic. I suppose it's fair to marvel at his performance at the George Harrison tribute, but I think he was showboating in a big way. Prince was always gonna Prince. I'm inclined to think he'd want Shiela E. to perform exactly as she did at his tribute.
They've done it before though. 'Nothing Compares 2 U' was released April 21, 2018, so there's precedent. I don't recall there being any controversy over that release being tasteless.
That was just that one song, and the song had become very linked to tributes after his death, so seemed an appropirate thing to attach to the anniversary, I don't remember if there was a big promotion campaign around it. Eventually we learned that the track was part of an album, but that release on the anniversary was not promotion to sell product beyond that one recording. It is a very different thing to what I am imagining from what you describe, which seems to be something along the lines of them having commericals announcing the latest Deluxe edition of whatever album in the middle of a tribute concert, that would have looked very crass. It would also have clouded what the intentions of the show was and made it look like it was not about the memory of the man and his music, but about commercialism, and I think there would have been a backlash if they had done something like that. It is a tricky thing with attaching things to the anniversary of someone's death, it is not something you want to "celebrate".
This was dropped yesterday, it doesn't fit in any of the existing threads, and since it is in a way a "R.I.P." thing of it's own I'm leaving it here: Prince performed this mournful version of "Dreamer" at his Dance Rally 4 Peace at Paisley Park on May 2, 2015, held in response to the death of Freddie Gray. Prince started the concert by saying, "To all those deserving, rest in peace." Rest in peace, George Floyd.
Also mentioned of course in this one. So said this situation has developed in his hometown. Let's hope something positive will result from all this.
Yes, one can read a little more about this release here (where "Baltimore" is mentioned): Prince estate releases ‘Dance Rally 4 Peace’ recording of ‘Dreamer’
