    Kind of sad really :(

  4. Man, what a massive collection. I bet this would give Joe B a run for his money in terms of shear volume of guitars and amps.

This thread makes me wonder what happened to the David Bowie's musical instruments/equipment. Were they ever auctioned off?

  12. There was an article a while back that everything was cataloged and stocked in various warehouse across US, under the control of his estate following a plan Bowie had set up.

Anybody snag anything at the auction? I was outbid on the King Tubby speaker - the hammer price was $26K.

  14. Wow. Was That King Tubby speaker/cabinet something Becker made himself or was it some limited manufactured item? It was an intriguing item.

How many of these had any significant provenance outside of being owned by Becker? I saw one or two listed as stage-played, but most seemed to be just accumulated stuff from his home.

That King Tubby speaker was iconic. There were a bunch of stage played guitars and amps. No question that the guy had a bad case of guitar acquisition syndrome. Some of the stuff got bid up out of control — couldn’t believe the prices that some of the parlor guitars went for.

Timing was obviously right--lots of Steely Dan fans still alive to bid.

  19. There was some provenance established throughout the catalog with photos of Becker with said instrument and they were ones with the highest estimates. There were a few Marshall plexis, and some 50s Fenders and Gibsons, not many. A lot of the collection seemed to be from the 90s onward, like the results of a huge buying spree. No Dumble.

It turns out Walter was quite the collector! Another stunning collection goes to auction, worth browsing through the catalog.

"...With more than 600 guitars and 400 amps in all, the property from the late Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker's estate over the weekend comprised the largest assortment of guitars and amps ever sold by Julien's Auctions in its 17-year history. Becker, who died of esophageal cancer at age 67 in 2017, was acclaimed as a guitarist, songwriter and producer, renowned for his quiet perfectionism in the studio with longtime musical partner Donald Fagen.

The auction, which took place at Julien's Auctions' Beverly Hills location on Friday and Saturday, fetched $3.3 million, overall, surpassing initial estimates of $1-$2 million on opening day.

"It's phenomenal," said Darren Julien, owner of Julien's Auctions. "Who else had this many guitars and this many amps? Who else had a collection like this? It's unbelievable. And he didn't just buy them because they looked great. He literally played all of them and that's what made this collection unique."

  24. I wonder if they'll do an auction of Walter's audio gear. There's probably quite a collection of that, too.
