    Hi Steve,

Just a couple of questions about this release.

Did you use the LP masters or session masters (I am not sure what tapes are available) for this release? Are they the same tapes as the DCC release?

Does Acoustech have two tape machines for cutting hits LP's or do you and Kevin bring in an additional/different tape machines for these jobs?

Did you do anything diferent for this release vs. the DCC LP?

I can't wait for this one! I am a big Roy fan!

Let's learn our lessons here. The "LP master" is THE master. A session master would be in multi-track form and is not called a master. Something is only marked "master" because it is suitable for "mastering". That's why it's called that!

Bill Porter ran a three-track and a two-track simultaneously during recording. We are using the two-track. Will it sound better than the DCC? I hope so; we have a different cutting system, and I feel that AcousTech's Neumann system is the best sounding in the world. Others think so as well.

One song IS going to be slightly different though, and that is "Oh, Pretty Woman". This one song was remixed in stereo in 1965, marked "master" and used for all Monument Orbison LP cuttings ever after, also all CD releases. This is the version that was used for the DCC release. Sony Music Studios guru (and SH Forums member) Rob LoVerde and Nick Shaffran, a great expert on "Orbisongs", uncovered the original December, 1963 stereo mix for me, unused for 40 years. I'll be using that for this new release. Less compression on it, clearer sound, not as much bass oomph, but bigger soundstage. You'll like it.

As always, thanks for the reply. Nice news about Oh, Pretty Woman!

You answered my main question, which I guess really was that the two track tapes recorded at the sessions were spliced together for the LP masters. I didn't phrase that correctly.

I would buy the CD in a heartbeat! Even, if only, to get the original 1963 mix of "Oh! Pretty Woman". I have always wondered why it sounded different than other Roy tracks...

There cannot be a CD. That is competing in Sony's own market. A no no.

Got it! Hmmm! Maybe a really cool S&P/SONY joint venture with you and Rob at the helm....I suppose I am dreaming?

    Thanks Steve!

that's what I was thinking; if SONY could make money on it (be creative) it would be a yes-yes! (wishful thinking)

Steve - are the lyrics to this stereo version "Come To Me Baby" instead of "Come With Me Baby"?

It's always "come with me, baby". That's how it was recorded. For some reason, a later mono recut substituted "come TO me baby". They did that by going back to the three track and looping in the new phrase onto a mono tape, then they had to get the harmony part to match so they bounced, mono to mono. One of the reasons that the mono version doesn't sound so hot..

    Hi Steve,

The infinitely helpful Nick Shaffran told me that the reason why the mono single of "Oh, Pretty Woman" has the line as "come TO me" is for radio. They knew that radio would never play the line "come WITH me" back then...

My how times have changed, huh?

thanks Steve. One little word changed the meaning (in some people's minds). It wouldn't even be noticed today.

Based on what Ive heard comparing the DCC CCR and Acoustech CCR Willie LPs, the new lathe/ cutting system kills the old one! Night and day IMHO (admittedely based one A/B sampling). I cannot wait to hear this!! I hope more DCC LP titles get redone! Pet Sounds, or Elvis perhaps...

For some weird reason that come to me line has stuck with me ever since hearing it on the radio in 1964. Even though I havn't heard it in years whenever I hear this song and try to sing along I say come to me instead of come with me.

But a hybrid SACD would be welcome.

So is an SACD a possibility? Now that would be interrrrrresting!

Thanks for finding this Rob and Nick!

Steve, this original 1963 stereo mix is the "live" 2-track mix made as the session was happening? Do you think you may have to add some bass "oomph" to it?

Yes, it's the live stereo mix. Will I add bass? Depends on how it flows with the other songs I guess. Haven't tried yet. I guess they remixed it at Monument for the Greatest Hits album.

Two cents worth: Oh Pretty Woman does not appear on the Monument vinyl versions of Greatest Hits or More Greatest Hits, but it IS on three other Monument LP's: "Orbisongs" (1965), "The Very Best of Roy Orbison" (1966), and "Monumental Pop Hits (1968). All have the original stereo mix with the "with" lyric. This means the mono 45, which came out in late summer of 1964, already had the substituted "to" lyric.

In the early 70's, CBS Records distributed, and later purchased, the Monument catalog and apparently remixed or remastered the 1965 mix. That newer version is found on all three Monument/CBS issues and reissues of "The All-Time Greatest Hits of Roby Orbison," which first appeared in 1972. It's too bright and tinny, and that's almost certainly the master used for all later cd releases.

Steve's right, as usual, you'll love the original 1965 mix!

Thanks Gary! - very insightful. I would have to believe the original mix is more open, imaged and dynamic than the re-mix?
