Tonight (Jan. 1, 2022), Saturday Night Live is repeating the show with Betty White as host, at the regular 11:30pm time. (My schedule guide says 11:29pm)

Maybe it's like those Heinlein stories of Lazarus Long etc, she isn't really dead, just had to show dead so she can be recycled into a newer younger identity.

The 30th was an early mistake and she died on the 31st.

And slowly declining with Dementia/Alzheimer's is a better option?

No, of course not. It's just a shock, even given her age. Slow drawn out suffering is awful.

My dad died of a sudden heart attack. No previous symptoms just went like that. My mom died over a course of 1 1/2 years of lung cancer. She was so strong, never complained and didn't show pain and agony. I don't know how she did it. Neither is good. I guess I'm just one who thinks we could live forever. Darkness is just so scary.

Of the four Golden Girls, hers is probably the best way to go out, peacefully asleep at old age. Estelle was out of the spotlight for years dealing with dementia, Bea had cancer and Rue's health went downhill quickly and died below her life expectancy. Betty made it 18 days shy of turning 100 and seemed to be full of life and doing well until it just ended.

    According to Vicky Lawrence
"“I texted Carol(Burnett) and said, ‘This just sucks. I hate this. It’s just horrible to see the people you love so much go away,’” the 72-year-old Lawrence said. “Carol wrote back and said, ‘I know, I know. I spoke to Betty’s assistant, who was with her when she passed, and she said the very last word out of her mouth was ‘Allen.’”

Another amazing part of her legacy:

Betty White paid, secretly, to evacuate Audubon animals after Katrina

"...the Audubon Aquarium shared a previously unknown story of White's generosity, WWL reports.
According to an Audubon Aquarium spokesperson, White paid for a private plane to relocate the aquariums otters and penguins to the Monterey Bay Aquarium after Hurricane Katrina."

    https://twitter.com/VidaRoch/status/1477021555850981380

"A thread about a Queen: I took care of the birds at the Aquarium for 21 years. After Katrina, we evacuated every animal that made it that we could. Got a call from Monterey Bay AQ. that they would take our 19 penguins and two sea otters and they had a plane in Baton Rouge ready to go. We got the animals there and boarded and I and a Vet flew with them. Asked the pilot what this was costing. I believe it was about $70,000.

Next morning, wanted to thank the director who I knew slightly. She said a donor paid and did not want to be identified. It finally leaked years later and Betty White did it. Didn’t want anybody to know. I’ve never posted socially about this, but what a Classy ******* Dame."

DECADES channel will air a weekend-long binge of MARY TYLER MOORE episodes this Saturday and Sunday. Many of the "Sue Ann"-centric favorites will air. Meanwhile MeTV will air some of the same MARY TYLER MOORE episodes on Sunday afternoon followed by MAMA'S FAMILY and THE LOVE BOAT with Ms. White's appearances.

John Amos is still alive, but at 14 episodes he wouldn't really be considered a cast member.
