I notice that, like me, you also rate Greetings from South Carolina fairly high & rate Long Hard Ride lower than most other people.

I'll throw up a name of a player who appears as a guest on their studio albums & always adds stellar parts to the songs. Paul Hornsby on piano.

I'll be really interested in your opinions!

As to the post Toy albums, what would you recommend, Spirit and Adventure aside?

Managed to find out a little bit about Beyond The Horizon, which looks promising. I quite like Chris Hicks' writing (his solo album Dog Eat Dog World is very good) and he seems to have been all over this one. Pricey though.

I've never found it. On my list though! :righton:

EDIT: Just had a glance on Amazon and it was there at a reasonable price so ordered! :pineapple:

Even though they have noone even close to Toy Caldwell as a guitarist this is a damn good cover.
The video that follows is a cover of ABB's Midnight Rider - also damn good.
I'm going to have to give Blackberry Smoke a good listen.

I love when MTB threads pop up. It was fun growing up in the South in the 70's when all those bands
were in their prime and always playing in the area. I got to see this band once in 1975 on the Where We All
Belong Tour. The last new release I bought was Searchin' For A Rainbow, but in the past couple of years I have
purchased everything through Dedicated although I still don't have Tenth. I don't think I could rank them, but
the first 4 will always be my favorite. All of those albums with Toy I have are great though.

It's been a long time since I gave them a spin. From memory (which is pretty lousy nowadays) the tunes aren't that great & Doug Gray is a few notches down from his brilliant best.

It can also be found as "Son of the South". They both sound good.

    Cheers! :righton:

Confirms my idea to pick them up if they're reasonable but not to throw a wodge of cash at them.

Thanks for reminding me about Tommy playing on this. I need to correct something I said earlier. He is on Running Like The Wind and Tenth. I said the 7 albums with the original members and I should have said 9. It's when they changed labels after the first 7 that gets me confused sometimes. I should know better by now.

If you stick with the ones I have pictured throughout this thread you will end up with great sounding discs that are not brickwalled, etc. I bought these as they came out. Yes, I'm a fanboy and always will be.

Some of the later reissues were brickwalled & loud I have heard. I do not know for sure.

If you are interested in a particular disc let me know, I can provide some pics of the later ones, I don't know if they were ever reissued or not.

I'd also like to mention a really great track that MTB did. It's a cover of BB Kings - The Thrill Is Gone. It appeared on Volunteer Jam album (the first one I think).
    Doug Gray just kills it.

    This may be it.
