I think this is the release that finally fully entrenched me into Dead fandom. The version of Sugaree on this release just kills me. To hear those solos and the crowd response...good lord.
I have to agree with your assessment of this version of Sugaree. I recently did a 2.5 hour flight with this on repeat for the whole journey including airport waiting time! Sensational!!!
The whole show is fantastic. I love it. It’s in any conversation I have (with myself) about the best May 1977. (Though 6.9.77 and 12.29.77 battle for my favorite 1977). There’s just not a weak moment and so many great ones. The “Sugaree” as mentioned. Love the “Estimated”. It ain’t called To Terrapin for nothin’—a great version. Excellent ‘77 “Playing” and return. Love all the Jerry ballads, as played with tremendous energy, and a glorious transition into “Wharf Rat”. In fact, the whole flow of that second set is glorious. And plenty of real rockin’ moments (love the NFA, and how the show comes to a close with the Sat Nite and “US Blues”). I felt like I didn’t know it at all when it came out—though the Compendium raved. Great release. And now... well, I said it. I convinced myself: putting it on now. ;-).
Just had a good giggle looking at eBay prices for this release, which is still available for just under $20 from Dead.Net.
Just listened to this again all morning yesterday. If I were trying to help someone understand the Dead, I’d probably give them this one to start with.
