Hi All I said in another thread I'm on a Stax/Atlantic kick at the moment, I'm also reassessing many of my compilations and replacing more modern (Loud, Compressed and NR'd) remasters with earlier CLASSIC RHINO compilations where possible, I'm especially interested in INDIVIDUAL ARTIST Compilations. My question is what Are the classic Rhino compilations from both a sonic & content perpesctive, as an example of what I mean I've pictured a few classics below.... Please post Pics or Links
Not Rhino, but Time/Life mastered by Dennis Drake. Solid Gold Soul: Deep Soul . Excellent collection of well known tracks, and original versions of tunes that were hits later for other artists.
I think the one they did for love: love story 1966-72 has excellent sound. It may be out of print though...
Ah! Too Many to even list here! I can say that the majority of my various artist comps come from the old Rhino with Bill Inglot in charge of the mastering.
Those are the ones I'm talking about. I'd really like to make this a comprehensive thread, it'll be helpful to many like me who are sick of modern versions with poorer mastering.
Carl Perkins-Original Sun Greatest Hits Jerry Lee Lewis-18 Original Sun Greatest Hits The British Invasion 9 volume series
Here's 2 more I'm led to believe are great collections. If anyone has any thoughts on any of these collections please share them.
There is a Clovers comp in the same series as those Darin ones that I would highly recommend. Brilliant group and lots of essential songs.
Thanks Jim, I've been looking at that one for some time debating whether to buy it, I take it this is the one.
I believe that Classics in Digital is a Warner Special Products title from before the time when Rhino was absorbed by Warner.
Since you listed the Albert King set, I would suggest these Rhino blues/zydeco compilations: John Lee Hooker: The Ultimate Collection 1948-1990 http://www.amazon.com/John-Lee-Hook...=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1327901995&sr=1-3 Lightnin Hopkins: Mojo Hand Anthology http://www.amazon.com/Mojo-Hand-Ant...=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1327902237&sr=1-1 Clifton Chenier: Zydeco Dynamite-The Clifton Chenier Anthology http://www.amazon.com/Zydeco-Dynami...=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1327902369&sr=1-1
Wow those are right up my street thanks for the tip off. This thread isn't just about soul although I think I gave that impression, this was due to the fact that my present Stax/Atlantic kick is what got me thinking about Classic Rhino. So Please no matter what the genre feel free to list any Classic Rhino CD's with great sound & content.
This 'Sisters of Soul' comp is great, mastered by Stephen Innocenzi. Out of print, but about a tender on eBay. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sisters-Sou...=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1327911531&sr=1-1 And this Solomon Burke comp is still in print, and cheap, Bill Inglot at the controls: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Very-Best-Us-Release/dp/B00000346M/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_2
That's the one. All depends on whether you like The Clovers of course. I think they are sadly neglected these days. At one time they were Atlantic's biggest stars by some way. I think they are brilliant, I love all their stuff. That comp is quite varied as well, lots of variation in their stuff. There is a brilliant clip on youtube of them doing 'Your Cash Ain't Nothing But Trash' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddnDuR8QG-s
