I remember her in a movie called Alice Upside Down that I remember watching as a kid.

Forget who she played though, but it may have been one of the teachers.

Penny Marshall was one of those rare entertainment figures who was able to find success on both sides of the camera. The transition from sitcom star to A list movie director is a substantial achievement in itself and she did it quite well . RIP.

I would think it was doubly hard for a female to achieve that kind of success back then.

    "Awakings".....that was a great movie.

    RIP

Ok, here's what I want. The other team is carrying away Kit after she's scored. Dugan, you look disappointed about coming so close but losing. Dottie, you're just overcome with love for your sister. Let's shoot it!

One of the reasons it's a great movie is that it dealt with a topic many had no idea existed.
    Plus, it had...

I credit Penny Marshall for Tom Hanks' career. After a strong start in movies, he was in a long slump when Marshall cast him in the lead in BIG which made Hanks an a-lister.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

“Hey! I knew her (not as well as you might be led to believe), but let’s also make this about me!”

The funniest scene in the movie to me was the ad-lib Lovitz did when he was in the middle of dialogue with Geena Davis on the farm, and a cow suddenly mooooos in the background. Without breaking character, Lovitz turned around and yelled, "will you SHUT UP?" I fell outta my chair laughing. Ms. Marshall told me that was totally Jon, and they kept that take in the final film.

Penny could be very difficult and neurotic -- she was especially hard on writers -- but I think she was very talented as a director. I only had contact with her for about 4-5 hours on the letterboxed version of League of Their Own, which we worked on in late 1992 for Sony Pictures, but it was clear she was extremely sharp on every detail of timing, performance, and story. I was sad for her that she had so few successes after Big and League -- she deserved better.

Her death made me finally buy a Blu ray copy of the film. For some unknown reason, I didn't already have a copy on any format.

  22. A friend of mine worked on Laverne and Shirley and even wrote a few episodes. I asked her about Marshall and her main memories were of just how smart Penny Marshall was. My friend quite enjoyed their limited interactions.

The "Sheldn" episode of the Odd Couple with Rob Reiner. She made an impression back then, and I had never seen her before. I believe I saw the episode when it first aired. One of her first TV appearances? Is that where she and Reiner first met?
