I have to admit my interest is piqued. The first Rocky just might be my favorite film of all time. IV was so cheesy it was good so I am curious to see a new cut. If any Rocky film needed a director's cut its V. If I understand it there are quite a few deleted scenes in that film a slightly different ending shot. I'm also aware that the original ending had Rocky dying but I don't know if it was actually ever shot. I'd actually like to see Sly take a crack at reworking it,but since he wasn't the director of that installment and said director has since passed away,it may not be legally possible. Stallone probably wouldn't deem it necessary anyway. The reason he made Rocky Balboa was to give the franchise a better end point and to sorta kinda overwrite V, even though technically it's still in continuity, one could almost skip V and go from IV to Balboa. The only thing one might miss is an explaination why and how Rocky went from his mansion back to his old house in the neighborhood.
I’ll be in the minority and say I didn’t like 4. When I initially saw it I felt it was a sellout to the series. Too slick, too hollywoodish. The series lost its footing with this one. I loved the first two films and enjoyed the third mostly because of Mr. T. I’m still looking forward to the new edit.
Rocky IV was good fun, and it's one of those films that just screams "80s!" Who thought that people would become nostalgic for The Cold War, or at least for the movies it inspired? Nothing like a good old fashioned Soviet villain.
I think "V" is underrated. While flawed, it's better than the soulless "III" - which only comes to life when we see Mr. T - or the "90 minutes of music videos" known as "IV"...
On the surface, I have no interest in film making revisionism but it's been some time since seeing this film so I might watch the recut stands out as different. I watched this movie so much as a kid, it's pretty ingrained. My guess is that Stallone will try to remove much of the cheese but this will just make it apparent that the cheese was binding it all together.
Replace Tommy Morrison with the robot. Kills two birds: removes Tommy Morrison and the satisfaction of watching Rocky pummel that robot in the back alley scene.
The first Rocky is my favorite film of all time, and I'm also fond of them all. Sly mentioned that Rocky IV is going to be more soulful with this cut. So, it sounds like it'll fit in better with 2006's Rocky Balboa and the two Creed movies. Though as a guy in his mid-40s, I have a soft spot for '80s cheese so I'll always enjoy the original Rocky 4.
As a longtime (big-time) Rocky franchise fan (Rocky I being the greatest love story on film), I must ask...what is this Rocky "V" you speak of? And I'm not sure what this director's cut will accomplish. No added footage, just cutting Paulie's robot? I'll likely watch it regardless.
