Sucking in the seventies The Four Tops - Reach Out (I’ll Be There) Not actually my top Four Tops, but still totally classic Motown excellence. Pulp - Common People Fun presentation of a satirical subject. Well done. I like this a lot more than I expected to. Excellent video to boot. Tracy Chapman - Fast Car This hit me really well at first when it came out... cool music, melody to match the mood, excellent vocal.... but then it's also a little too dark and depressing to stay in any playlist for long. Ray Charles - What’d I Say A soul classic, but still a little too repetitive to hold my interest, especially over the years. Still a mother of an earworm though.... gonna' have this stuck in my head the rest of the day for sure. Beatles - Yesterday This only sits this high in this batch because of all the junk below it. Heartfelt though it may be, there's some problematic lyrics that make me lose any possible empathy and think dude, just get over it and move on. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah No doubing the power of this melody and message. No doubt I've heard this way more than I need to by now. Can I have some Free Bird or Hotel California instead.... please? Amy Winehouse - Back to Black What a retro vibe the music has! Sometimes that can be made interesting, more often not. This is mostly not for me. The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner Sounds like it was thrown together in 10 minutes with about half that thought invested beforehand. Surprisingly good solo though. Beyonce - Formation What @Brian Kelly said Johnny Cash - I Walk the Line I sing the line.... the monotonous line that sits within my most meager vocal range. Captain deadpan strikes. Listen to the line or watch paint dry? I suppose it depends on the color of the paint. The unchanged top 20: The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again Steely Dan - Deacon Blues Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear the Reaper John Coltrane - Pt. 1 Acknowledgement Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now Rush - Limelight The Who - Baba O'Reilly The Kinks - You Really Got Me Boston - Paint it Black Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird Bob Seger - Night Moves Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit So What - Miles Davis Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Carole King - It's Too Late Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash Etta James - At Last Santana - Oye Como Va
68. Chic, ‘Good Times’ 1979 WRITER(S):BERNARD EDWARDS, NILE RODGERS For Chic, disco was more than a beat — it was a “new state of mind.” Guitar master Nile Rodgers and bassman Bernard Edwards were inspired by the glam art rock of Roxy Music, as well as jazz and R&B. As Rodgers put it, “We shared Afrobromantic dreams of what it would be like to have real artistic freedom.” “Good Times” turned those dreams into a utopian disco celebration. It’s a hedonistic Seventies roller-boogie hit with an ironic edge, while Edwards plays one of history’s most influential bass lines. It’s the bass that kicked off the hip-hop era — the Sugarhill Gang rapped over it for “Rapper’s Delight,” while Grandmaster Flash turned it into “Wheels of Steel.”
"Good Times" Absolutely top shelf funky disco music, just like "Le Freak" from the year before, which I like even better. Whereas their first hits, such as "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" were still very much run-of-the-mill disco, with "Le Freak" and "Good Times" they took the genre to an entirely different level.
Good Times is definitely top 100 worthy - Edwards and Rodgers are phenomenal talents and this song was highly influential. Very funky!
Good Times That's more like it. It's classic status is well deserved. Great song with a great bass line.
Good Times Excellent song! I remember it being a hit in the summer of 1979 and I bought the single (with its picture sleeve). A couple of years later I got Chic's Greatest Hits album and enjoy the 8-plus minute version of the song with its long instrumental breakdown on there.
Three songs I would never consider for my top 100 and probably only "Suspicious Minds" would be considered for my top 500. Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley) This was a nice comeback song for Elvis. It would be in my top 10 of his songs, but probably not top 5. There are others I'd pick before this, but it will make the lower end of my current list. RATING :4/5 All Too Well (Taylor Swift) I prefer early Taylor Swift. This has a bit of the early country/pop flavor. It's good, but it goes on a little long. Nothing I'd have in my top 500, but I suppose it could make my "other worthy songs" list. RATING: 3/5 Good Times (Chic) I HATED disco by the time this came out as I was so sick of the overplaying of disco on the radio and the repetitive nature of the songs (this one included). So I can't say I'd put this in my top 500, yet I recognize the staying power and influence of the basic beat to this son g enough so I can include it in my "other worthy songs". 67. Bob Dylan, ‘Tangled Up in Blue’ 1975 WRITER(S):BOB DYLAN When Dylan introduced “Tangled Up in Blue” onstage in 1978, he described it as a song that took him “10 years to live and two years to write.” It’s still one of his most frequently performed live staples. It was the six-minute opener from Blood on the Tracks, written as his first marriage was falling apart. Dylan takes inspiration from classic country singers like Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, in a tale of a drifting heart on the road through the Sixties and Seventies. Dylan kept revising the song heavily through the years; on 1984’s Real Live, he plays with the chords and lyrics to tell a whole new story.
"Tangled Up in Blue" Definitely one of his better songs and lyrics, but I keep having problems with Bob's delivery, which means that I usually give his music a wide berth. My loss, I know but at 60 that's unlikely to change.
When Tangled Up In Blue' came out it , along with its parent album ' Blood On The Tracks' were hailed as a comeback for Dylan. But it wasn't a comeback . Dylan had never been away. In the few years before its release Dyjan had released the excellent 'New Morning' , the ' Pat Garrett...' soundtrack, ' Planet Waves' and a handful of good singles. There's an element of overdrool involving 'Blood On The Tracks'.
If Hank or Lefty had written it, it would've been half as long and twice as good. And that's just as a song, without even talking about them as singers. There are days when I think Bob really is all that and a bag of chips, everything his acolytes think he is, and other days when I think he's a net loss to American music. The sound of self-indulgence. A good editor would've helped. A real job would've helped more.
66. Simon and Garfunkel, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ 1970 WRITER(S)AUL SIMON When Simon wrote this tribute to friendship, he and Garfunkel were arguing over everything, even who should sing it. “He felt I should have done it,” Simon said. “Many times I’m sorry I didn’t.” The “Sail on, silver girl” verse was Garfunkel’s idea; Simon has never liked it. The melody came from the Bach chorale, and the title phrase came from a Sixties song by West Virginia gospel group the Swan Silvertones — “I guess I stole it, actually,” Simon told Dick Cavett around the time “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was the Number One song in America, a position it held for six weeks. He later paid the Silvertone’s singer, Claude Jeter, $1,000 as a way of saying thanks.
I know Art (and Paul for that matter) may not be easy to get along with, but Art's amazing vocals are so beautiful! I doubt it would have gone far with Paul singing it.
Art totally owns “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. A great recording of a great song. For all the great singers who’ve had a go at it, including Elvis and Aretha, none can match Art. And my second favorite person to sing it is Paul Simon.
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" Ok, I'm going to get a lot of flack for this, but while I love many S&G songs, this one for some reason just never worked for me. I think it's the over-production veering into bombast toward the end that bothers me. Give me "Sound of Silence", "America", "Mrs. Robinson" or "The Boxer" any day over this one.
song is linked forever in my mind to the time we were partying and during this song my buddy succumbed to the effects of alcohol and marijuana in excess combined "like a briiiidge over [retch] troubled waters [retch]" into a wastebasket he did
65. Earth, Wind, and Fire, ‘September’ 1978 WRITER(S):ALBERT MCKAY, ALLEE WILLIS, MAURICE WHITE Earth, Wind, and Fire were at their commercial peak when they went into the studio to cut “September” in the fall of 1978 as a bonus track for The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1. The nostalgic song about a perfect September romance was written by EWF guitarist Al McKay, bandleader Maurice White, and songwriter Allee Willis, who hated White’s additions of “Ba-du-da” and “Ba-dee-ya” throughout the song. “It took me about a month to calm Allee down,” White wrote in his memoir. “She perceived it as a slight to her lyric-writing abilities.… Try as I might, I couldn’t get her to understand that good music is all about the vibe.” She probably calmed down when the song hit Number One on the R&B chart and Number Eight on the Hot 100.
I WOULD NOT DISAGREE WITH ANYONE WHO CALLS BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER THE GREATEST SONG EVER! Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) I recently did a top 10 Dylan hit singles and placed this 6th. I also did a top 10 Dylan album tracks and feel safe to say my top 5 would also be ahead of Tangled Up In Blue. So it is safe to say that, while I think this is a decent song, there is not way it would be in my top 500. Actually I can see at least 3 Dylan covers in my top 500 along with 2 or 3 of his originals. Yet in the context of the songs here I can at least give "Tangled Up In Blue" my "other worthy songs" tag. RATING: 3.5/5 Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) As I say at the top of this post, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is one of the songs I would consider if voting for the greatest song ever. My wife and I have been on a major Simon & Garfunkel kick recently and I only find this song more majestic as the years go by. Garfunkel's voice takes the song to the next level. The piano part is so beautiful and the lyrics and sentiment have rung so true for me being on either side of that bridge! It tops my list. RATING: 5/5 September (Earth, Wind, & Fire) I rate this song higher now than I did in 1978, as I was so down on disco by then that even anything with a somewhat funky beat was not something I was interested in hearing. But what a revival this song has had! The runners on the Cross-Country team I coach all love this and I've come to love it too. My favorite by Earth, Wind, & Fire and worthy of the top 500, though nowhere near top 100 for me. RATING: 4/5 My Current top 150+ List: 1. Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) 2. I like all those other songs, but Bridge tops them all for me. The "bombast" as you call it sounds totally "majestic" to these ears. I love how it starts simply with vocal and piano and builds. The song is 100% worthy of a "majestic" ending sound to me. Garfunkel's vocals are amazing.
