I agree it's not the same world it used to be, but I think that means the bar has been lowered and famous people can now get away with saying terrible things they could not have in the past.

This seems analogous to the Duck Dynasty controversy a few years ago. In both cases we have offensive comments made by a star of a very popular show. The Duck Dynasty guy semi-apologized and there were pretty much no consequences or changes to the show. I suspect that will happen here. ABC is not going to cancel a huge hit show, and Roseanne's comments were not of the sort that's going to inspire a massive advertiser boycott. The only way the show might be jeopardized is if some major cast member (Goodman, Metcalfe, or Gilbert) quits the show in protest. But I do not see that happening.

edit: I wrote the above before seeing Jerry's post, obviously. Wow. I am surprised.

I'm not..it's 2018 and public opinion can take down almost anyone or anything so ABC wants to get ahead of it.

Yeah...other networks are lining up to hire someone that people are now thinking of as a racist- that's the kind of publicity they need.

The people I really feel bad for are the rest of the cast, and the writers who are now all out of a job through no fault of their own.

She's not helping with the employment situation, that's for sure. I wonder how all the cast and crew feel about losing their jobs because of her disgusting comments. I would love to hear quotes from the cast.

It's hard to imagine the show making it to another network or platform intact, because now that ABC has taken this stand, if the cast members were willing to continue the show somewhere else it would make them look like they were condoning her statements.

The "Roseanne's Family" idea almost seems more plausible, if they tried to build a show around Sara Gilbert's character. The difference being that I believe Roseanne owns or co-owns the intellectual property, so I presume they couldn't do that without her being financially involved in the show, which might make it an non-starter.

Publicly they won't say a word against her because they know that if they slam her, and she takes the show elsewhere they would not be brought along. Sometimes you have to decide between your values and getting a steady paycheck.

    Privately, however...

I guess that her promise to leave Twitter is moot now.

What a shame that one stupid, thoughtless tweet has ended (for now, anyway) what was a really fantastic revival with a very talented cast.
