Avalon is their best, I also like Flesh + Blood, and Manifesto.

Start with the first two, Roxy Music and For Your Pleasure, groundbreaking stuff and their influence can still be felt. I really think the first four albums are must haves, but there are a lot of people who prefer the later albums.

Their early output is very different from the later stuff, more raw, experimental and dissonant. With each album, they gradually grew more polished and sophisticated. It took me a little while to warm up to their earliest efforts, but I really love them now, particularly For Your Pleasure. I enjoy all five of the original pre-hiatus releases. If you're more a fan of the slick stuff, Avalon cannot be beat.

It depends if you're interested in groundbreaking and experimental, or safe. If the former, start at the beginning. If the latter, start with Avalon. The first five albums are my favorites.

With Roxy Music you would need to determine which of their sounds you like more....
If you like semi avant guard pop/rock the debut Roxy Music

If you want a really good pop album that rocks pretty well Country Life

If you want pop that is smooth as a silk dress Avalon or flesh and blood

I'd go with the first 2. More experimental than they wound up being, some parallels with Krautrock sound.
Eno added textures that he takes with him when he goes, band remains interesting though .
THink most of their stuff is pretty good. I went through a period of listening to the early 80s stuff at one point.
But mainly stick to the 1st couple and live stuff from the Eno era.

My interest are the first albums and you must buy for sure VIVA - the live album. One of the best live albums ever.

Yeah, that's a winner. I would really love to hear an expanded edition or some other type of live archival set from the 70s. They were a powerhouse live act. I do enjoy their DVD, which features a lot of different live performances from different eras.

It depends on the kind of music you're looking for. Roxy Music is very different to Avalon. I love both, but I'm more interested in their first two albums.
Get all of them, it's safer!

As others have said, it depends on what style of music appeals to you most. Personally for me it would be:
    Roxy Music
    For Your Pleasure.

    They are totally brilliant albums.

There is a stylistic shift after between Siren (the 'pause' album) and Manifesto (the reunion album): the earlier period is somewhat more experimental, particularly the first two. But from 1979-82, they were a lot more commercial and a lot less adventurous.

  18. Roxy had three phases:

1st two: S/T debut and For Your Pleasure
both interesting Britcentric awkward art rock with glam flourishes

middle three: Stranded, Country Life, and Siren
their most full bodied, full blooded period, nice balance of firepower and melody, could go head to head with whatever you consider the best Britain had to offer at the time

    last three:
Manifesto, Flesh and Blood, and Avalon
dance and club oriented, more and more lead singer Ferry's vision, if you love his voice you'll love these, band fades more and more generically into the background, until Avalon, which could be viewed as an apex or dentist office pablum ala Steely Dan's Gaucho

Thanks. Guess I need to pull up some YouTube videos of their debut and Avalon to get a better feel.

Best of the first phase : Stranded (even Eno’s favorite)!

    Second phase: Avalon

I’d start there. The most accessible pop/rock record is Siren but that’s actually my least favorite of the first five.

My favorites are Country Life, Standed and Avalon. The first two rock and the latter is much smoother but with terrific melodies. But there's great songs on all their albums.
