    About a real life tragedy.

    The School House Fire

    'Twas an afternoon in springtime
    Folk were happy everywhere
    Preparing for a joyous evening
Never dreamed that death was near
    To a little country schoolhouse
    Neighbors thinking they would go
They would have a jolly evening
    At the children's little show

You could hear those children singing
    Voices ringing clear and sweet
Never dreamed in all their joy
Of the fate they were to meet

But their joys all were blighted
They began to scream and rage
When a lantern fell that evening
    Streaming fire upon the stage
It was on that fatal evening
They could not control the fire
They made a mad dash for freedom
But they perished in the fire

You could hear those children screaming
While the flames were rolling high
Daddy, come and get your baby
Will you stand and let us die

Their brave daddys, they were trying
To their little ones to go
But the brave old fellows perished
In the chaos from the show
    Little children they were trampled
    In that mighty rolling flame
Others on that night were screaming
Death was dealing just the same

There's a lonely spot in Cleveland
    Nicely fenced around and wired
    There's a monument erected
Tells the story of the fire

You could hear those children screaming
While the flames were rolling high
Daddy, come and get your baby
Will you stand and let us die

And it came to me then
    That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time

As I stared at my shoes
    In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409

    And I rationed my breaths
    As I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today

    As each descending peak
    On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
    Away from me

    Amongst the vending machines
    And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

It sung like a violent wind
    That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds

And I knew that you were truth
    I would rather lose
Than to have never lain beside at all

    And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
    As the TV entertained itself

'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
    And everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said

That love is watching someone die

So who's gonna watch you die?

A song that is beautiful from a melody standpoint and on the surface sounds quite joyful.
Until you listen to the lyrics.

    I second "Tecumseh Valley."
Emmylou Harris - "Red Dirt Girl" kills me every single time.
O.V. Wright - "He's My Son (Just The Same)"
And of course The Band's "It Makes No Difference." One of the few songs I'd prefer nobody covers, as Danko's vocal just cannot be topped.

"True Love Ways" and "Grow Old With Me"...both about looking forward to a long and happy life with your true love, and in both cases we now know they had only weeks to live.
