I remember watching it when it first aired. I was rolling on the floor.

And the disappointing aspect of that "Wake Up & Smile" Will Ferrell sketch is that I haven't laughed as hard in any of his movies and I don't think it's Will's fault. But then it was the same for me with Chevy Chase after he left SNL for a movie career.

I've loved that piece since it first aired. 2013, time flies! Hard to believe Cecily and Aidy have been on the show that long (this was their first season ?). They're both so great.

The weight talk is unfortunate and irrelevant. She's talented and funny. End of discussion.

I agree. She's an actress and comedian, not a runway model.

So we all agree - the entire cast of SNL could "get it."

I liked that too. One of the funniest bits of the episode, getting to see their reactions when they read the lines.

Reminded me a little of Stefon, who didn't get to see his lines (written by John Mulaney) until he read them aloud.

I hope that becomes a recurring thing.

I will defend the 1985-86 season. You could see the potential there. Lovitz had a breakout character (Pathological Liar) and Miller was the best Weekend Update anchor that they'd ever had (and he redefined the role forevermore -- his combination of snark/sarcasm/cynicism has been a crucial element of every good Update anchor).

Weekend Update was further bolstered by A. Whitney Brown and the return of Al Franken and Father Guido Sarducci.

Also, the 1985-86 season had a refreshing return to the type of ensemble work which had been lacking since 1980 (the early '80s were dominated by Murphy & Piscopo, and the 1984-85 season was dominated by the Crystal/Short/Guest triumvirate).

The problem was that the rest of the 85-86 cast had too many "straight men" -- Nora Dunn, Randy Quaid, Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall were actors, but they weren't comedians (or comics).

Lorne Michaels made the right choice to bring in more people with a comedy background, although I think that he did make one mistake: he shouldn't have fired Joan Cusack. She was a rare breed who could effortlessly float between "straight man" and "comic" (much like Phil Hartman) and would have blended perfectly with the classic 1986-1991 cast. She would have been a better option than Victoria Jackson, who was funny when she stayed in her lane, but had a very limited range and could not play a straight character.

Ah, c'est la vie. Cusack ended up being better off.

There's a funny piece on Vulture about the background of the sketch, including this quote:

It's funny that Leslie being a huge Weezer fan was the starting point of the sketch. I figured they wrote it and then had the inspiration to think, who would be the least likely person in the cast to play this part?

You know, I didn't even think of it from the perspective as getting the least likely person to play that role. I think it's partly because Leslie did such a good job of owning that performance.

I like that the same guy also wrote Adam Driver's oil baron sketch -- another sketch that required absolute ownership of a ridiculous premise.

Maybe you have to like Weezer? I haven't seen it yet, but have heard about it from a few friends. I do like Weezer, so I expect I'll like the sketch.
