Kardashian was stiff and wooden throughout, but you have to credit the writers with coming up with sketches that weren't too challenging for her (playing herself, or her own sister, or a brainless bachelorette-style bimbo). And in the case of the lottery sketch, her stiffness actually enhanced the role she was playing. They also gave her a really sharp, well-written monologue that managed to work even with her lack of comic timing.
Thought it was another good episode, had me mostly engaged. I wasn't sorry that I decided to watch it as written & performed, on Saturday Night & Live, rather than watching it via youtube clips following day(s). Yes, Kim had lots of help & her gaze makes it obvious she's reading cue cards, but she was good. She does have a dynamic charm, which I think helps that lack of ability pass. Others who don't have comedy or acting background have been more stilted. But, I give them credit for so publicly stepping outside comfort zones. Halsey was very good. I liked that the 2 performances were completely different-type songs & pacings. Read a little backstory on her new album, learning it does have special guests, incl. Lindsey Buckingham, who performed 1 track w/her. It was produced by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, which sounds like an ideal match for producer for her (from what I have heard of her career). I've enjoyed Halsey in SNL sketches, so I was a little disappointed she didn't have more speaking lines, w/larger skit presence. Fails for me: The 2 "guests"/ Weekend Update. Alex Moffat, Terry Fink movie review & Heidi Gardner life-coach Kelly Party, they played Icona Pop song to death in just a few minutes. The whole skit quickly became irritating, but then IDK, maybe life coaches themselves may be quite irritating, in which case they would've nailed the parody, thereby perhaps being funny to those familiar. Continue giving the newcomers more to do, they're better than some of the returning, in-place cast members.
Like many, I imagine, I was surprised Kardashian could speak in complete sentences. She had a low bar to clear, and she cleared it.
I felt like this week’s episode was “passably adequate”. Little of it was memorable, and most of it didn’t do much for me — but I had a few chuckles here and there. It wasn’t quite as bad as I was expecting, but my expectations going into it couldn’t have been lower.
I think it's clear Kim is actually very bright. We can say she's famous for being famous, but somehow she's managed to remain massively famous and successful for a good 15 years now. She's apparently worth $1 billion, so she's obviously a savvy businesswoman. I don't follow Kim much, so I don't know a lot about her public image. If she comes across as dumb, though, that's an act - no one succeeds like she has if they're not smart. (I have read that Paris Hilton's shtick is just that: an act for public consumption.)
I noticed something new with the KK-hosted episode, more breaking the fourth wall and showing the audience at the end of sketches.
I enjoyed the KK episode. The writing was good and I laughed several times. They used her image appropriately and didn't make her look stupid which is always hard to watch. Weekend Update was hard and funny. Really good video short about the hard cider. I agree with Oatsdad about her innate intelligence. She also appears to have an emotional intelligence. She is a person who has access all of her life to the best teachers and it's clear she has the capacity to absorb and utilize what she learned. Check out her interview with Jennifer Lawrence as fill-in for Jimmy Kimmel for more evidence. It's a brilliant interview of a celebrity.
KK may well be intelligent. I thought the monologue was the best part of the show. Otherwise I was bored with her persona. Maybe I'm too old for it. Heavy dose of Cecily and Aidy didn't help. Please leave the show, I am bored with both of you. Thank god Kate and Kenan were gone.
OK, he was in the Aladdin one at least. That was the third different time SNL has had a skit with Aladdin and Jasmine on a flying carpet. I must have tuned it out.
To be clear, my comments about Kim's intelligence don't mean I understand her fame or success! I'm completely mystified why so many seem so fascinated with her and her family. But credit where credit's due!
When you have to hate-watch a show just so you can get to the Weekend Update segment...and have to sit through an awkward mess jam-packed with stunt-casting...it's more like "torture watch". Not only did the lame attempts to benchmark news-guest characters drag the only segment worth watching down, but...they suck time out of the segment that could be used for, I dunno, "Weekend Update"...? I remarked to my wife, the only segment I enjoyed were the three unknowns doing the "Writers Room" sketch, because it was clever, and well-timed, and original commentary on a real world topic (the signature beverages). I had to ask myself, were these some of the new cast, or actually writers, showing-up how much better they were than the real cast. As for the stunt-casting, I felt Dead Art Garfunkel playing Lindsey Buckingham was a cute idea...but he didn't look at all like Bill Hader.
SNL has been reported dead more times than Abe Vigoda and always comes back. Quality goes up and down and up and down. Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong are consistently great. I’ve watched it since the beginning and the Jost/Che news is the best the news desk has ever been including the late great Norm McDonald. Those that don’t like it? Don’t watch it. It was probably here before you were and will probably be here after we’re gone. I still really enjoy it.
Both shows had sketches where 2-3 parts were written so that every cast members gets at least 20-30 seconds on screen per show.
Ohmygosh!!! I didn't watch the whole show, but what I have seen is so funny! These opening shows of this season have been strong! & the new cast members, solid, esp. *Aristotle Athari! * "Angelo" & Todd (Aristotle & Rami Malek (Daniel Craig & Cecily Strong) "One word" = hysterical!! Next: Celeb School Game Show, esp. Chloe Fineman..Jennifer Coolidge = nails it!!
Sure, that seems like enough to establish short-term interest, but Kim K. has been a major celebrity for years. I don't question why she gained fame in the first place - it's her ability to stay super-famous that astounds me!
