I think it's a fair question. Both sides are pretty well represented in the song, and it made a lot of sense to look at it from the child's point of view when we were all much younger. Now that a lot of us are closer to the position of the parents than the daughter though, I'm wondering if anyone has changed their perspective?

Stands up as a classic either way, so really there's no wrong answer.

gregorya I approve of this message

    The poll needs another choice:

    "Both"

I hear this and relate to both sides, always did, even as a very young person in 1967.

It's really kind of a heartbreaking song when you think about it.

Allegedly, Ray Davies wrote this from real life, and it's actually about his sister, who emigrated to Australia with her husband. Ray was very close to her.

I wish I could hear the vocal track we all know (which is a vocal overdub onto the ‘best’ take, take 1, of the instrumental backing track) instead overlaid upon the alternate take 6 instrumental backing that was included on the 50th anniversary Sgt. Pepper.

There are things about that take six which I prefer. Maybe if it had vocals it could be the definitive version for me.

I side with both in this song and the resulting emotional conflict gets me every time. All I can do is cry for them all.

On a side note, I've long wondered why they didn't say "Love is the one thing that money can't buy" instead. It's more accurate, (money can buy lots of fun) and it hearkens back to an earlier song of theirs.

The Beatles all belonged to the Silent Generation (y.o.b ca. 1928-1945) the young girl is a boomer and her father would have fought in the war as part of the Greatest Generation. Parental sacrifice writ large. Stifling to the kids though. Macca wouldn't have bothered finishing the song if he hadn't felt that.

A great tune with a storyline that with heart tugging melodies, strings and instrumentation.
It’s well balanced so both sides seemed to have the right...as a great songwriter, that’s what Paul McCartney successfuly acheived.

I sided with the daughter in 1967 because she got away from all the materialistic parental BS..

It just reflected my life so well at that time & at 67 yrs old I remain with the same mind set

Theoritically, I should side with the daughter. After listening to the song, I side with "Both"(which means that the song has succeeded as a work of art).

All these years later and its still a puzzle to me. Furthermore so many times I wonder what her name was? Is she connected to Elenor? And where did the other girl go that crawled out the bathroom window? And who the heck is that Michelle person?? Why didnt Mother Mary intervene with someone crawling out of the sorority bathroom window???

So many more unanswered and puzzling questions I wring my hands and lose hours of sleep daily over. The Beatles: sometimes fun, sometimes torture in a living hell.
