I wonder if that was how the episode originally aired (first time around) on CBS, and it was recut/redone later for some reason (perhaps for a second run on CBS prior to syndication)? Or was it completed, then the network demanded changes to the story before it aired, resulting in scenes being reshot, and the one character being recast?

Wouldn't make sense for Shout! to recut the episode with alternate scenes not affected by music. Sounds like they were provided with an alternate master of some sort. Hope it can be corrected (or the more familiar version of the episode can be made available to those who purchased the box set).

Every Night is in ... so just goes to show how reliable that list was! (Not so reliable, as it turns out).

The fact that both McCartney tunes are in but all three Beatles tunes are out does indicate that the problem is greedy publishers, not artists. McCartney owns the rights to his solo material, and sure enough there it is on the WKRP set. However, The Beatles do not own the rights to their "Beatles" music - it's owned by Sony - and what do you know? No Beatles. Can't blame The Beatles for that though - have to blame Sony.

I'm sure it's the same thing with Dogs.

At first, I wondered why Nicolette Larson's estate would be a stumbling block with "Lotta Love", then I remembered that crotchety old Neil Young wrote the song and it all made sense...

So far, it seems like a good set (and probably the best we'll ever see), but there's already enough missing and screwed-up stuff to keep me from dumping my old VHS tapes and bootleg DVDs. So, I'll wait to buy until it inevitably (with the holiday season approaching) shows up as Amazon's deal of the day for $60 or $70. Not worth full price to me if it only adds to my WKRP clutter.

This seems the most likely explanation (that what is on the new set is the original version, and it was changed later). All of the things that are different are definitely worse, and Johnny owing the money is never mentioned in later episodes. I'm guessing they tested it & decided they needed to change the ending.

Just finished disc one....very little to complain about:

The missing Floyd ("Turkey's Away")...noticeable, but was handled better than expected using a "Dogs" sound alike. The pacing of the scene changes slightly as well (due to lines referring to PF cut), but I've seen this episode more times than I can count.

The missing Van Halen ("Hold Up"). Very minor. The replacement music was OK (probably better than the music replacement on the retail VHS release and the Fox DVD), and it's only a few seconds.

The video quality is generally decent for 35 year old videotape, the black levels seemed a bit "crushed" on a couple of episodes, though.

Glad to have full episodes (notably "Hoodlum Rock"). This is the most complete the series will ever get, so for me the set was well worth the price of admission. I'll still hang on to my old VHS tapes and copies from the old syndie run, but I don't see myself going back to them too often (probably only for the uncut "Turkeys Away" and the more familiar "Contest That Nobody Could Win" at this point).

As for the alternate "Contest..." episode, perhaps it will be corrected (either with a replacement disc, or in a future "single season" release).

    On to S1, disc 2.....

Out of curiosity I quickly checked out the episode "In Concert". Happy to report that Bill Evans (who wasn't on the artist list provided by Shout!) is still there.

I forget if this artist was on the list, but could someone check the S3 episode "Hotel Oceanview" (the one where Herb, Andy, and Carlson go to Dayton to land the Vicky Von Vickey jeans account) to see if Herb Alpert's "Rise" made it? There's a great scene in one of the hotel rooms with Herb and his high-school friend who used to be a male but is now female. Herb's all uncomfortable learning this news and turns on the radio to put himself more at ease. Don't know why, but it always cracks me up to hear "Rise" right then.

Got my answer from that Home Theater Forum link. "Rise" appears in "Hotel Oceanview", but apparently is cut from an earlier episode in which it was also used. Go figure...

I recall mentioning this in other forums a long time ago, but this is the version I recall seeing when the series first aired, and we watched it on a Canadian network that may have aired it earlier than CBS did (by a day or maybe only an hour, I'm unsure). When we saw the syndicated version with the different ending we were confused. As it was, when asking, I never got any corroboration from any other person that this ending had originally aired in the US.

Nah.....the "other guy" didn't list every song. I have never seen a complete list of music used in the show.

The excellent list at the other forum (and copied above) concentrates on changes/edits, and the spreadsheet floating around is missing quite a few titles.

I watched this particular episode last night and I can tell you, out of the dozens of times I've seen that episode I've never seen the version that's on the DVD set. The "original" version (as aired in the US, apparently) is way funnier to me, what with the routine about Johnny wanting to pay back the money in "four hundred" payments, etc. This one seems like a dress rehearsal after which they refined the script and found a better actor to play the phony winner. I sure hope they resolve this, HOWEVER my favorite bits of the episode (the contest songs, the people on the phone, etc.) are all intact so it's not a huge issue for me in the long run.

Thanks for all the info. It's a shame that Dogs still didn't make the cut but I'm glad a fair amount of music was cleared and that some of the substitutions are a bit less intrusive. It's great to read about the good picture quality and how few syndication edits there are. It's too bad they mostly ported over the extras from the Fox edition rather than include new ones. I will probably end up getting this but I will look for the best bargain I can find. I'm willing to wait a bit till a used copy shows up.
