Ian McShane gets my vote as GOAT for his work in Deadwood.

Then someone must be doing an Oscar worthy performance of DDL.

You’re right enough. I never knew he was knighted. Sorry about that.

He's definitely a contender, but I'm not sure I'd give him the crown. I like actors that can do comedy as well as drama. "Dying is easy, comedy is hard."

Daniel Plainview was a meaty character role that I can't see anyone else doing better. It's one of my favorite performances in movies.

The Last of the Mohicans is my favorite DDL film to watch but not his best acting. I never tire of watching it.

No worries. I think he deserves it more than McCartney, Elton John, and probably Sean Connery and a few others.

I wouldn't have called DDL the "GOAT" anyway, but I think the people who point out his lack of comedic chops have a good point.

Can you be the best at something if you can't "do it all?"

As far as I'm concerned he is. Many would say Laurence Olivier, Gary Oldman, Robert DeNiro, or, perhaps, Pacino. Joaquin Phoenix is another one bordering on being an all-time great, but Daniel Day-Lewis is the best I've ever seen.

It never played anywhere I could see it. And I didn't bother to seek it out on video.

I still remember Howard Stern's parody more than the film itself...lol

That is definitely one thing that Laurence Olivier has all over Daniel Day-Lewis - tremendous comedic ability.

He was very funny as Bill The Butcher, whilst still maintaining an air of danger. That's brilliant acting.

Pelé is sometimes considered the greatest footballer of all-time but that doesn't mean he was a proficient defender.

None of Day-Lewis' films are a favorite of mine, but that is more about my personal taste. He is certainly a a fine actor and I would not disagree with anyone who wanted to call him the best; he is certainly in the conversation at the very least.

He was very selective. That's helped his legacy. His CV looks solid.

De Niro and Pacino had a great run from early 70s to mid 90s and then most of the subsequent work was... very questionable

Helps and hurts, like posted above, we didn't get to see him in other role.....comedic etc. Someone like Michael Caine did more fluff than anyone I know, but we got to see him do every kind of movie there is, and good or bad awful he's usually good in it. I think if Philip Seymour Hoffman was alive he'd be my pick for current actors , shined in dramas and was funny as well (boogie nights) and a brilliant character actor skills (Capote)

He was one of the very best. The first time I saw him in a movie was Scent Of A Woman, back in the day. He made a real impression on me at the time.

definitely, i feel like he had one of those faces tooo, could play 25 to 50 with no make up. hes really good in a little scene film, love liza, plays a man whose wife commits suicide, starts sniffing gas and gets into remote controlled planes.... really haunting performance
