  1. Exactly. It had to be good enough to pass muster for being at least near-Uriah Heep, and it was. If it has been too ham-fisted, the jokes would have worn thin quickly. Played too professionally or without the absolutely bonkers lyrics and it would have been neutered. They just nailed it. The follow-up album may have been a bit too polished, and I think the joke wore a little thin there. Back From the Dead got a little closer to the original inspiration.

I've never been able to figure that out, because in the movie, is the one he's playing two sets of four string basses?!?

  13. I wonder what Status Quo thought of being one of the key models for Spinal Tap, in terms of their career arc - unsuccessful beat group changes their name and sound to something more psychedelic, scores a big hit, then quickly morphs into a hard rock machine.

He is. It’s a double neck bass guitar with two four string basses. It’s ridiculous and was meant to be so.

I love the story of how Liam Gallagher was convinced they were a real band.

"His amused brother NOEL recalls, "He thought they were real people. We went to see them in Carnegie Hall. Before they played they came on as the three folk singers from A Mighty Wind

We were laughing and he said: 'This is sh**

"We said: 'You do know they are American actors?'

"'I'm not f***ing having that,' he says, and walks off. He's never watched Spinal Tap since.

"He'd seen the film and loved it and thought they were a real band."

Derek, talking about David and Nigel: "They're two totally distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, and I feel my role in the band is to be kind of the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water."
