Lots of snark and nastiness—how about a sarcastic anthem?

“Got ‘a thousand points of light’ for the homeless man/Got ‘a kinder, gentler’ machine gun hand…”

I usually think of three from the '60s together. One is the obvious Positively Fourth Street by Dylan. One is Where Were You When I Needed You by the Grass Roots. The other is Laugh Laugh by the Beau Brummels, with this quatrain:

Wouldn't believe me when I gave advice
I said that he was a tease
If you want help you better ask me now
So be sincere, convince me with a pretty please

Moving on into the '80s, I always remember this pair of lines from King of America by Elvis Costello:

She said that she was working for the ABC News
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use

Wendy James' "Do You Know What I'm Saying" (written by Elvis Costello)

    The past prima donna
    In buttons and bells
Was speaking what's left of her mind
    As the audience rebels
Do you know what I'm saying?
    Those intimate
    Melodramatic farewells
    At about twenty thousand
    Or so decibels
Do you know what I'm saying?
    The lights they were dimmed
    The music by Strauss
    She entered on rollerskates
    Fetchingly tousled
    She danced like an ambulance
    Talked like a cartoon mouse
    She took off her clothes
And it brought down the house
Do you know what I'm saying?
