The Aaron No 1.a has No tone controls. Only a menu where you can make some adjustments regarding channel balance, preamp setting. But you can not change sound wise.
But the sound is incredible from this amp.

Even YOUR WIFE told you not to. Most wives would want to "get rid of that ugly ass junk". Lesson learned. Whatever you do, DO NOT get rid of your wife. She sounds like a keeper.

  7. Many years ago I owned a California Audio Lab Alpha (CAL) DAC. When they closed their doors, I sold it. I went thru a few newer DAC’s and really began to miss that old Alpha. I purchased another one, it was damaged and the seller covered the cost. The repair person called and said it was a “Special Edition”. The IC board had gold everywhere and was slightly different from my older one. Doing some research I came across an old employee of CAL and he explained what I had. The following is the post from Audiogon I received, sorry it’s a little long but you old guys who remember CAL may find it interesting. BTW, I still have it.

Below is a letter I received from a former CAL employee.

    Allan
There was no special edition Alpha per se. There was
only the standard Alpha, and then ones that had the
    24/96 upgrade.

But heres the rest of the story. CAL made a "Master
Series" of components that were gold versions of the
Alpha DAC and Delta transport (this was pre 96/24
upgrade). I forget what the model names were, but we
did not actually put the Alpha and Delta names on
them. They were in different size/shape chassis than
the Alpha/Delta and were a high gloss gold plated. The
internal circuit boards were also gold plated, and
some of the capacitors were upgraded. I have never
seen seperate schematics for the Master series
components, so I am 99% positive that the circuits are
the same as the Alpha/Delta, they just have some
higher quality parts in the analog section.

The Master Series were very pricey, came in their own
special wooden crate, and were primarily sold in the
overseas markets. Although there are a few in the
states here. I dont know how many we actually made,
but if I had to guess, I would say less than 25 of
each model. They had one major drawback which was that
the gold would flake off the chassis and then it would
look like crap. This happened to all or most of them,
and there was no way to fix that problem. So the
Master Series was a cool idea, but effectively a
    disaster.

I remember seeing some of the gold XFMR's and boards
in inventory that were left over from the Master
Series. Some of these got put into the Alpha chassis
to use up the parts. This is what you have. Congrats,
as you now have the sonic benefits of the Master
Series, without the hassles of a defective gold
    chassis.

In reality I dont know how much better the Master
Series sounded vs. the Alpha. I was never able to
compare them. Like I said, some of the parts were
upgrades, and a gold plated board in theory should
sound better than the standard PCB. You have the 24/96
upgrade also so you pretty much have it all. I'd
probably hang on to that one!

Vandersteen Model 2C speakers. Bought 'em at a garage sale, NM, not even broke in. For $10. Wife didn't like the looks in our new home. Sold em for $400 and thought I was King Snot. King dumb is more like it. My previous pair of Model 2s (a little rough around the edges, wife "suggested" years before I sell them) sounded great and I'm sure these would have eventually. Yup, still regret selling those 2Cs.

I should have kept a Perreaux SX25i for second system.

My end system which i once had in house when i was a hifi dealer is gonna be a Soverign Director and Glory. I should have chained it to My listening room.

Not familiar with these but appreciate the story!! Very cool that you got your hands on something with that kind of story. Is your gold flaked off like he mentions?

That reminds me of another "sold it, regret it" item from when I was a teenager: an early 1970s Gibson SG guitar

  15. That is the outer case of the original Special Edition my outer case is standard CAL Alpha. The IC board is in fine shape and still sounds wonderful. A taste of great on 90's.

I’ve bought my children some affordable instruments and combination amplifiers from Peavey, Ampeg and Vox, nothing over $250 plus gasoline. A 1990’a Peavey Fury USA bass for my son and a 1987 Korean Hohner Telecaster. Neither was crazy money, but I’ll shed a tear if if they’re ever sold.

Naim NAP250 'Chrome Bumper' power amp...... the money was handy, but it has taken awhile to finally get a Naim system back (thank the lord) for my LP12.
A NAP 250DR is on order.....I won't make that short-term selling error (that led to long-term frustration) again!

I won an auction for an Audio Note Dac-3 Signature on Audiogon, there were no bids so on a whim I bid the minimum and didn't think about it again. No one else bid so, to my complete shock, I won but didn't really have the money for it unless I sold my current Dac. So I sold that Dac, a Yamamoto YDA-1 to member @Whoopycat . After he got it he sent me back a message totally raving about the Yamamoto and ever since I've wondered should I have kept it? Especially since that was 3 years ago and he still owns and loves it.
