Excellent! you're right--pretty much the entire album can be considered muse-based. Probably unique in that way....

She also has a "wide awake, crescent-shaped smile." Just look at it.

right--the eternal mystery! i've noticed in recent mixes of this song, Mick's BG vocals are WAY up in the mix now! when it first came out you could hear them, but they weren't all that predominate.

  9. "Outsider" musician Daniel Johnson was obsessed by a girl named Laurie Allen who worked in the bookstore at his college, and a bunch of his songs are about/inspired by her.

Continuing my ambition to bring Stevie Wonder into every thread, I'll mention that as a teenager he wrote "My Cherie Amour" as "Oh My Marsha" for a girl at his school who he had a crush on. When he brought the song to his then-musical mentors Sylvia Moy and Henry Cosby, they felt it would work better with a different name.

Here's Wonder telling the story in concert. This is pretty funny. If the musical thing doesn't work out, I think this guy could have a career in comedy.

Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens wrote some.

Rod Stewart has had several as well.

George Michael’s “Cowboys and Angels” is about model Marla Hanson, I believe. She had her face slashed in a horrific attack in New York sometime in the 80s.

Susan Moore inspired many Tim Hardin songs, and he devoted an entire album to his life with her and their child, entitled Suite For Susan Moore And Damion - We Are - One, One, All In One....

Nowadays it's a name mostly known through Scott Walker's version of Tim's Black Sheep Boy. "Ladies name was Susan Moore, Daddy was the law...."

Hasn't every songwriter in history written at least one about a specific boyfriend/girlfriend?

Of course there are lot--but how many of them are great songs along the lines of Layla?

And actually there are some very talented and famous people whose work never went in that direction--John Fogerty for one--did he ever write a love song for anyone? not that i can think of...

Pete Townsend and Ray Davies are two other very important artists whose work also doesn't have any muse-based songs that i can recall...there are lots of others...

    About his wife:

Townshend also wrote a couple about his wife. With Ray Davies I think you're right, can't come up with a specific one. Though I'd guess he wrote "You Really Got Me" about somebody.

It's worth at least reading the Wikipedia page about Maxine. She inspired a lot of EJ songs: Maxine Feibelman - Wikipedia

Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" was inspired by a platonic relationship (unusually for him) with Suzanne Verdal not, as some think, Suzanne Elrond the mother of his children who he wouldn't have known at the time of writing the song.

Justin Hayward wrote his solo single "Marie" for/about his wife.
