hey joe is a song that while i agree most versions are about as good as any other, i never saw what in it as a song inspired so many people to cover it, but its appeal to musicians is obvious even if i don't get it.

from same era, always felt there were a confusingly large number of 'tobacco roads' again if you like the song, all perfectly fine, but i never liked or understood the appeal of the song.

Good to know as I don't listen to either band.

  3. Great song!

Those of you who have never heard a bad version of "Today I Started Loving You Again" should check out Mike Love's on his unreleased Country Love album.

Then again maybe you shouldn't. :D

Covered by everybody and their brother. Besides the original, in my collection alone, there's Edgar Winter's White Trash, Grateful Dead, and Gregg Allman. That's pretty select company.

They also did "Don't Let me Be Misunderstood", and managed to make the two songs sound almost exactly the same.

Johnnie Rivers... one of the best cover artists of all time. Made every song his own. A singular talent, although respected never seemed to get the due he warranted.

Both songs so strong even a poor performance would be moving... never heard a bad version either.

"She Taught Me to Yodel" is in the repertoire of just about every country yodeller.
And there have been some pretty bad versions of this song.

Bobby "Blue" Blands', Percy Sledges' and Bettye Swanns' versions are 3 that I really appreciate.

I'm not familiar with that song (I'll correct that), but the title lends itself to the possibility of some "questionable" versions.

I'd go further than that; I'd say with a title like that, it's impossible to imagine a version that's NOT questionable. :)

Here is Kitten's version (with the gender changed).
She's from New Zealand, not sure when the CD came out, probably early 80's.
It's easily available for a low price, and with every track as ordinary as this one you will understand why.

I've always found "He/She Taught Me to Yodel" one of the more ordinary yodelling songs which turns people off the artform.
There are some very good country yodellers (usually from Australia), but you have to look to find them among the many cliched bad yodellers.

"Hallelujah": The "Louie Louie" of serious songwriting,. not that "Louie Louie" isn't serious songwriting.

I haven't every version but I like all the versions of "Baby, Please Don't Go" that I've heard:

Them, Amboy Dukes, Ted Nugent (live), AC/DC, Gary Glitter, Aerosmith

Nor have I heard every version; but from my perspective you can add to you list of very good to great recordings of Baby, Please Don't Go by: Big Joe Williams, John Lee Hooker, Mose Allison, Big Bill Broonzy and Lightnin' Hopkins. Never heard a bad one.

Sorry to be the messenger of bad tidings... but if you can help it you'll want to avoid Pat Boone's version of Tutti Fruitti. Good Golly Miss Molly it's awful.
