Songs that make me sad always have more wrapped up with the memories associated with the song than the song itself. Here's a few:

    1. Dead - It Must Have Been the Roses
    2. Richard Thompson -- Beeswing
    3. Kate Wolff -- Green Eyes
    4. Cohen (particularly as sung by Jennifer Warnes) - Famous Blue Raincoat

These are just a few that come time mind... and I love them all.

Much of Lou Reed's Catalogue is based in hard cold truths of hard cold facts that if internalized can make one shiver in pain and sadness. The numerous songs don't necessarily have to be called out as Sad Song(s)... they just hurt. Berlin man! "Stick a fork in them they're done". Donald got that right. ...The Day John Kennedy Died. It's all Magic & Loss on that Dirty Blvd.

This may have been posted. It's not just the song, it's the setting. From the 1975 documentary Heartworn Highways. This kills me every time.

Yesterday for the first time, I heard Joe Pesci's new CD called "Still Singing" and while I didn't ever expect to be brought to tears by Joe Pesci, I'll be damned if he didn't get me there by the end of his cover of Ernest Gold's (Andrew Gold's father), "Exodus". Simply beautiful, in every way ...

Jeff Buckley - "Lover, You Should've Come Over" - Live at Sin-é (recorded 1993):
Sometimes you need to be in a certain place emotionally to hear and feel a connection to a song like this. This performance tops the album version in raw power and grace.

Ultimately, the song seems to help with the coldness of heartbreak. The studio version attempted to pack it down into a pop song.

She’s Already Made Up Her Mind, Lyle Lovett.

So now she's sitting at one end of the kitchen table
And she is staring without an expression
And she is talking to me without moving her eyes
Because she's already made up her mind
