i don't think this has ever been addressed here, if it has i could not find anything on it. the standells single 'try it' was hyped up as being banned (big BANNED across the front of the album in red letters). i know it was 1967, but i don't get it, there were a whole lot worse lyrics floating around back then than this.
Paul Revere & the Raiders said exactly the same thing in "Let Me!", and they said it about as forcefully. But there was two years difference. (Granted, some radio stations had a problem with this one too, but they got yo play it on TV).
By this point in time The Raiders' time had clearly come and gone...and here they are in 1969 trying to sound tough, risqué and relevant in very fast changing times. I remember this song getting a very tiny bit of air play on 77 WABC in NYC but it it didn't do much. I don't think it even made the local top 20. They did bounce back a couple of years later though with, Indian Reservation. I preferred Lindsay's Arizona.
The Ohio Express version of Try It got some airplay up here, prior to their bigger hits. Glad they cleared up that problem on the radio permanently LOL
They were still on TV all the time though; this was when "Happening" was on the air five days a week. And they did get to play the song on the show, even though it was aimed at a teen audience.
"Try It" is a great song, I have it on the Rhino Nuggets collection. Classic 60s garage rock I never thought it was popular enough to be banned though That being said, there's nothing subtle about this song, it's very in your face. I can see why some back then might have thought it too risqué, though today it seems pretty silly
I dig this song and love the album that features it, but I have to disagree: The Standells are properly rated.
A wise man once told me, “ There’s no such thing as a dumb question unless it was just asked five minutes ago”. The answer: Oui; “Far Out Munsters”, Episode aired 18 March 1965.
Wow, what a cool song! I probably hadn’t heard that in 40 years. Great production, is that the Wrecking Crew?
Probably to some extent. But the later Raiders (with Freddy Weller and Keith Allison) were especially good players and were usually on the records too.
Great song if way too long though, is this some kind of extended version? That main guitar riff sounds just like the one on the Grass Roots "Midnight Confessions" Anyway, I've heard so many great songs from this group that they might be next in my list for a "Best Of" collection
