For the longest time, this was the only metal I would listen to. The Sleep/Nik Turner's Space Ritual show I saw back in the mid 90s ranks as one of my top 5 favorite concerts ever. I was a Hawkwind fan, but had never heard Sleep. My head exploded when I heard those orange cabinets and saw the NASA moon footage on the giant screen. I loved their set so much I was disappointed with the album Holy Mountain when I bought it because it lacked that power. Only The Sword and Kyuss came close.

And the first 3 Funkadelic albums are great psych/stoner rock...pre-funk funny enough.

I'll defer the list to everyone else because there are a lot of great suggestions here.

  4. Some great great suggestions here but please don't ignore the sonic cudgel of Cowboys & Aliens' "Trip to the Stonehenge Colony" & "Love Sex Volume".

Stoner rock is really one of the most nebulous genres out there. At some point it all starts to seem like people are just cherry-picking various albums out of other genres such as psych, krautrock, alternative/ metal/ proto-metal, and then other people jump in to yell at them that "that's not stoner rock, man" with an eye-roll emoticon attached for good measure.

This album should be near the top of any essential Stoner/Doom collection:

Goatsnake - Flower Of Disease (2000)

There is also a self-titled album and an EP available.

The guitarist would go on to become 1/2 of drone band Sunn O)))

Greg was actually doing Sunn0))) while he was still in Goatsnake. He's also been a part of Teeth of the Lions Rule the Divine, Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, and Engine Kid, among others.

If it sounds good when you're stoned it's stoner rock. Kraftwerk's Autobahn in stoner kraut rock. I'm listening to it now.

Josta Voke we do beg your pardon but we are in your garden

I had to perform a minor act of necromancy on this thread for the sole purpose of including a band that for some reason I never see mentioned alongside all the usual suspects like Kyuss, The Obsessed, Grand Magus, etc.

Abdullah was a short-lived band on Meteor City Records in the late 90's/early 00's. Their second album, Graveyard Poetry, while sometimes a bit peppier than what usually qualifies as "stoner," is one of the best things to come out of that subgenre. It might lean a little too close to alternative rock at times, which could explain its seeming absence among "best of" stoner rock/metal lists, but there is a decidedly Iommi/Wino influence in the music. I wish the performance had a little more life to it, though; sometimes the songs can sound a bit flat -- which is a shame because the songwriting, riffs, and vocals are all out of this world.

Huh, while grabbing those links I noticed that they've still been putting out music, as late as an EP in 2005. Clearly I need to get on top of this.

I still say the Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf is the greatest love song ever written.

Fu Manchu lost me when they put out California Crossing, but for some reason I kinda like that cover and that title is classic "dumb" Fu Manchu. Still, I'm almost certain this'll album will disappoint me.

...give it a try. I felt the same. This is a nice return to form. It's a quick 38min album that is great on replay.

Love love love me some Fu Manchu! Gigantoid looks like fun, can't wait to hear it. Big fan of everything they've released except I thought Signs Of Infinite Power was awful. I like California Crossing a lot, in fact last year that's probably their album I've played the most.

I could see McCartney and Wings Wild Life as stoner rock-not metal of course but on the edge of psychedelic.

The Church would fit the bill-including Steve Kilbey solo and other assorted projects.

    Barclay James Harvest
Early Supertramp-especially the songs where they stretch out.
    Traffic
    Led Zeppelin
