Carina Round Greg Edwards Gunnar Olsen Maynard J Keenan May Mitchell ... otherwise known as Puscifer is a pretty ship shape stellar band assembled from a lot of seasoned players and a couple that have solo careers before stepping into the band. Queen of the Stone Age currently. Also - THEM CROOKED VULTURES.
My overwhelming memory of Golden Smog was going to Sam The Record Man in downtown Toronto and seeing stacks and stacks of that Golden Smog album for 99 cents. They sat there for what seemed like months, collecting a layer of brown dust. Golden Smog was the proverbial tree falling in the forest.

If CSN(&Y) count, that's clearly the one. The others are nice diversions but only CSN(&Y) would be in the R&RHOF . . .
New Race was a Detroit rock-styled super-group based in Sydney, Australia formed in April 1981 featuring three members of Radio Birdman: Deniz Tek, Rob Younger, and Warwick Gilbert, along with their inspirational mentors: Ron Asheton of The Stooges, and Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson of the MC5.
The current line up of The Wedding Present features John Stewart from Sleeper, giving us a C86/Britpop supergroup. Miki Berenyi’s post Lush project Piroshka features former members of Moose, Modern English and Elastica, bringing Shoegaze, New Wave and Britpop into the mix. A moot point whether either counts as a supergroup given their solid but selective fan bases. On a related question, would the Stones count as a supergroup after Mick Taylor or Ron Wood joined(1)? Come to think of it, would The Faces count given Rod and Ron’s exploits before they teamed up with 3/4 of the Small Faces? (1) Personally, I wouldn’t count prior membership of the Bluesbreakers to be sufficient given the sheer number of people who shared a stage with John Mayall over the years, so I’d say no for Mick and yes for Ron.
Not that I'm a fan of all of them but Mike Portnoy might be the 'King' of prog and prog metal supergroups having been in so many of them, including: Transatlantic Liquid Tension Experiment Portnoy Sheehan McAlpine Sherinian Flying Colors Sons of Apollo Winery Dogs Metal Allegiance BPMD Hail!
That's a no on the Stones, but you could have gone for The New Barbarians: Ronnie Wood Keith Richards Bobby Keys Stanley Clarke Ian McLagen Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters) Since one Stone = two Beatles, this must be the most super-duper supergroup of all time! You may well have a point about Faces.
I didn't consider Cream a supergroup, I knew nothing of Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker before Cream, like everyone I knew in the US. When I read about Blind Faith, I thought who in the hell is Rick Grech but based on the other three I consider that lineup the supergroup with the most potential. It didn't pan out with only 1 album for me, even though I still play it. I will pick CSN&Y as the top supergroup based on output and Traveling Wilburys based on the members star power before forming.
Interesting that you put up the cover of the deluxe release. The second disc with the jams is pretty dull for me. I do like the Mofi of the original album.
I put the Mofi Cd up there too, my prefered CD listen, though I mostly play my original UK Polydor 1969 Lp when I am in the mood for "Sea of Joy" and/or "Can't Find My Way Home". I put up the Deluxe cover not because I like it(quasi-censored cover or edition)--I find the jams and extras mostly boring too, but to avoid over-zealous censoring; now a days, anyone puts up an old cover which has nipples someone always has a tizzy fit and reports it and said pic and often post gets deleted, which I was trying to avoid. Ironically, Self-Censorship, a sign of the crimes of the times. Folks were so much chiller back in the 60s and 70s, at least as regards nudity--after all our natural state-- now a daze people (us US folks especially) are far too hung up on nudity and co-modifying and rewriting the past to their standards of today, which, quite frankly, are sorely lacking, but I digress and wander off into a beautiful, but dangerous mind field...
I came here just to mention them. I always wished they'd squeeze out another one. I would also mention Naked City. That was a one of a kind band that could do ANYTHING. Both bands feature Fred Frith on bass.
