Ordinarily I'm all for a good race lift, but the Mario franchise is pretty whitewashed to begin with. French-descended Charles Martinet voicing two not-quite-stereotypical Italian characters written by Japanese people, with Mario now being voiced by a Midwestern screen actor, and brother Luigi being voiced by a New York screen actor with at least some Italian descent. Not sure Latin representation is really being missed here. Going to go out on a limb and say the Super Mario franchise is not the hill to die on for culture warriors, right or wrong.
English localization strikes again: Legends of Localization: Super Mario Bros. Translation Comparison: Names Besides, who doesn’t love a good alliteration?
You can even, unsurprisingly, call the number: Peebs - I called the Super Mario Bros Movie phone number
Site works too, which is pretty standard these days. Still I think it's brilliant. If I'm not wrong, this is the actual original theme song recording from the Super Show, not re-made or even re-mixed. This movie will be a nostalgia-fest for longtime fans, and I'm fully on board. (Also, I hate the DiC shows and wouldn't miss 'em, but that's just me)
I was doing some comparative listens and I believe you're correct. Maybe even from the original tape somewhere instead of a crappy Youtube upload, but then plastered with 80s TV noise so you'd never actually be able to tell. Some question online regarding who voiced the "customer" character, presumably the same voice actress with the ad read at the end. One tweet I saw said it's the original voice actress from the TV show that was the voice of Princess Toadstool, which led to some speculation whether other voice actors from the show would be worked into this movie somehow. Tommy Bechtold on New Rockstars also confidently said it was Cyndi Lauper, who was a known wrestling fan and friend of Lou Albano, the original TV Mario from the Super Show (as you probably know, but including for others who may not). So who knows until we see (if we see) the character in the film? As you said, a nostalgia-fest, and I'm here for it too.
She sounds too much like 80's Peach dor it to be a coincidence imo. Especially in that context. Cool throwback.
I'm gonna see it when it comes out. And I can't wait for this film to be a financial success, and for John Leguizamo to go sit in a corner somewhere. It's like he forgot that Bob Hoskins wasn't Italian, either.
Thanks for sharing but that was just a fluff piece. Basically it's them saying "There hasn't been a good or accurate Mario show yet so ours is great" While this movie looks game accurate I so have to give the Super Show some credits. Since there was do few Mario lore with only 2 games having been released they just made up their own lore and actually gave character to a bunch of video game avatars. Character that has maintained since with things like Luigi being the scared/cautious brother and Peach being not just a damsel in distress.
Lately, there seems to be this trend in Hollywood: Glowing reviews and high hopes from Studios, Box Office bomb. Negative reviews and zero hopes from Studios, Box Office hit.
