I find it interesting that it wasn’t until Super Bowl XXV in the early 90’s that the irritating spectacles we’ve come to expect started.(New Kids On the Block) Earlier ones had marching bands and over the hill performers. I preferred the older shows, since they were shorter, and the networks would go back to the studio and show first half highlights.

    And The Who were okay.

I never watch them. Good time to have a shower

(U2 in 2001 was alright though; I did watch that one)

None of them compete with Prince’s halftime show.

I will say that Maroon 5 this year totally sucked... Travis Scott growling through “Sicko Mode” was arguably the highlight, and even then half of the song stupidly got bleeped out.

Lady Gaga kinda looked like the Thin White Duke in some parts of her halftime show... that’s literally all I remember of it.

In terms of being enjoyable 10-15 minute sets by reliable competent professionals-McCartney, Petty, Stones.
In terms of being fun spectacle water cooler moments- Madonna, Michael Jackson.
    In terms of being both-Prince.

Also, with Rocketman having come out this year, Elton John seems like a perfect fit for a halftime show.

Super Bowl 36. U2. And my Pats finally winning their first Super Bowl. Enough said.

In the past few years, probably Bruno Mars. But honestly, the NFL is so controlled and curated, it sort-of kills the spontaneity that the best rock’n’roll relies upon. So instead, it lets the best choreographed performer shine.

But I loved Janet Jackson’s nipplegate “fiasco” and the moral panic that descended upon the ever-Puritannical American football-watching public.

Have to agree, Bruno Mars put on a great show , lots of positive energy. Prince performance was right up there as well. I am more into R and roll but these guys really out shone my old favourites.

Except for McCartney, the Sones, The Who and Prince, I’ve turned the sound down and visited with family and friends. So I guess my favorites were the ones mentioned.

    Nothing will ever top Prince.

But... Stevie Wonder tap dancing at Superbowl XXXIII was good:

Prince, in the rain ... heroic.

McCartney, Petty, Madonna honorable mentions. Big thumbs down to Up With People, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga.

They should have let George Clinton and company do one.

Prince was easily the best one.

Bruno Mars was a pleasant surprise.

in hindsight theyre all pretty hideous, the rushed medleys, the fake crowd enthusiasm, cheesy choreographed dances...

I love The Who, but I thought their show just okay. It should have been so much better because I know what they're capable of as performers.

Yeah, kids can watch one of the most violent sports ever, but God forbid a woman shows her nipple for two seconds. Nipplegate had to be one of the most blown out of proportion events in history.

Great suggestion. I saw Elton this past November on his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, and he was fantastic.

Mars and Gaga probably got the biggest boost from halftime shows. Bruno's exposed to him a big audience that didn't really know him, whereas Gaga's show reminded people why they'd loved her a few years earlier...
