Hadn't heard about this, but apparently it was released back in March: John Morales Presents Teena Marie – Love Songs & Funky Beats, by Teena Marie Saw it mentioned in this recent Bandcamp Daily feature on John Morales: A Guide to John Morales, Disco Mix Pioneer “I think Teena is somewhat underrated, and people don’t really know much about her,” says Morales of this new collection of mixes from the incredible singer, songwriter, keyboard player, producer, and arranger who passed away in 2010. “These mixes are a lot closer to the original recordings than other M+M stuff,” Morales says, adding that the album was 10 years in the making. “I started this project when Teena was still alive and she didn’t want her music to be made something it wasn’t. So I was very careful to make it true to the original, but to also make it a powerful M+M mix.” I know it might not be everyone's cup of T, but I've always been a big fan of John Morales mixes (and club mixes in general) so it sounds pretty good to me. Plus I'm all for anything that brings some attention to the amazing music of Lady T! Here's a 30 min sampler/mix from the BBE Soundcloud John Morales Presents Teena Marie – Love Songs & Funky Beats (Album Sampler)
I've seen the Unseen episode of Teena Marie but not being (with who sounds like the same narrator). Good copy.
It’s crazy she didn’t do more music videos back in the day. I remember hearing a few of her songs but to be I honest, I missed a ton. I can’t believe how much I missed! Really been listening to her music lately. Wish there was a box set or something but I’m going to pick up individual albums. Really good music. Great voice!!
In case it hasn't been mentioned yet: I once heard that Ike Turner, his career hurting from losing Tina Turner, suggested to Teena Marie that she should join up with him in a group which would be called The Ike and Teena Revue. I'd relish hearing Teena's response to that idea!
A complete deluxe box set would be fantastic. Thing is, the rights are divided between UMG (Motown recordings) and Sony Music (Epic recordings). Don’t see much chance of a project like that in the future - unless fans really clamor for it. Perhaps her daughter, a longtime champion of Teena’s music, would be willing to spearhead it.
Don’t know if you guys have seen this but it’s my favorite interview of Teena from 2009: Pax Stereo TV Archive (Teena Marie episode) In it she goes into the making of her music more than any other interview I’ve seen. Good to watch again.
Dang, missed this one: bass line from I Need Your Lovin' on Jada's (now) old track - By My Side Jadakiss feat. Ne-Yo
Whenever I see a forum poll on best female vocalist I always forget to include Teena Marie in the top 3.
Three words: "You. So. Heavy". It's nearly Prince Rock and Teena is there for it. Add the poetry of the lyric and dag! Ed
