    Mark Ronson - "Summer Breaking":

The harmonies are surprising, creative, and scratch that Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder itch for me.

    Crystal Stilts - "Invisible City":

A dash of Joy Division, a sprinkle of OMD, a dab of Jim Morrison in the vocals, and a wee bit of Syd Barrett in the guitar chords.

Did you mean to skip 2017? I thought it was a decent year.

I just grabbed a few albums. I didn't skip it on purpose. I didn't want my list to be too long.

See, now this is what I call a good thing.
I have so much to choose from now. Stuff I will probably NEVER hear on regular broadcast radio.
I know I won't like some of this stuff, for that is the nature of the beast.
But I bet I find some really great stuff too.

Thank you all. I greatly appreciate the time and effort.
I asked for new music because this is what I am wanting to hear.
If an old band is making new music it is still new music.

As much as I like all different types of music I do tend to follow a liking for more structured music. I find the music I like depends on my mood and situation as well as the musicality of the song and the talent of the artist.
This does not mean everything I like has to be perfect..I mean The Ramones are not exactly "high brow" music, but I like a bunch of what they have to offer.
Benny Goodman has a few songs I am over the moon for but he also has songs I can give or take.
I don't really have any artist or band that I am faithful to, for most of who I like has also made some stuff I think is not very good.

Like most of you I suspect the music you enjoy is personal...You just like it, and that is answer enough. The genres are varied, as well as the music, and that is what I like most about music.

To be fair I did not ask for "best" anything, and that was on purpose.
I asked what you think is good new music. I want your opinion...because it is not my opinion.
I am certain there will be good music opinions I just don't like, and that is okay with me.
I am certain there will be good new music opinion I find very enjoyable.

Mostly though, I asked for opinions because they are new and different to mine and can possibly steer me in a direction I otherwise would not have taken.

My ears don't perk up very much anymore when I hear new music and frankly, it has been that way for years. That's not the music's fault... I'm just old and it's not really aimed at me.

But I make a practice of listening to the one station in my city that is independently owned and where I know there's a chance I'll hear a new song that catches my attention. I also am likely to hear something, quite often, that takes me back to the days when I was soaking up new music like a sponge twenty plus years ago.

That said, here are five songs from the last five or so years that caught my attention and I still love to hear each time they are played. I've hot-linked them to YouTube.

2014 – J. Roddy Walston and the Business "Heavy Bells" | Indie rock/Roots rock [350,000 views]
    2015 – Hot Chip "Huarache Lights" | Synth-pop/Alternative Dance [3 million views]
    2016 – The Greeting Committee "Hands Down" | Alternative Pop/Indie [200,000 views]
2017 – Rex Orange County "Love Is Easy" (feat. Benny Sings) | Indie pop/Neo soul [16 million views]
2018 – Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats "You Worry Me" | Roots rock/Indie folk [3 million views]

Its hard to know what an individuals tastes are from what you posted, but Ill give it a shot.

There really are only so many combinations of chords and ideas in pop music. Every once in awhile though an artist comes along and builds upon something that has potential to be very special and then lightning strikes and the art comes together. For me anyway that was an artist called Father John Misty.

I think he has or at least had for the album "I Love You, Honeybear" from 2015 that thing that all the great singer songwriters have. Elton John, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Warren Zevon etc. He has a unique way of explaining the human condition and love with fantastic words and sweeping bloomed chordal structures.

See if you care for this:

Beck is another artist from way back in 2002 that put out probably the best breakup album ever. Its called "Sea Change". Nothing sounded like it nor sounds like it.

I'll second this. Modest Mouse defies categorization but put a brilliant album with Good News For People Who Love Bad News.

I'm finding good new music comes from not looking in the same old places. And occasionally, paying attention to what's interesting to you, then looking to the links on the right on YouTube, and "people who bought this also..." links on Amazon.

Love Julien Baker. There is a slew of super talented young female artists making fantastic music right now. Besides Baker, there’s Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail, Faye Webster among many more I could name. Here’s an early Baker gem from her first album.
