With their brilliant synthesis of folk and country, baroque and roll, San Francisco’s Beau Brummels made a major and lasting contribution to the lexicon of American popular music in the mid-1960s. ‘Turn Around: The Complete Recordings 1964-1970’ is the exhaustive overview of their legacy has so long deserved; presenting the band’s classic Autumn and Warner Brothers recordings in definitive fashion.

Boasting the stellar songcraft of Ron Elliott and the unique voice of Sal Valentino, the Brummels were amongst the first American units to respond to the British Invasion with innovation rather than imitation. The group remained popular and influential in the US long after their 1965 chart successes with ‘Laugh, Laugh’ and ‘Just A Little’, and once the act had devolved to the duo of Valentino and Elliott in 1967, the Beau Brummels moved to the forefront of Warner Brothers’ late 1960s pop renaissance with the albums ‘Triangle’ and ‘Bradley’s Barn’, the latter a visionary country-rock masterpiece.

Assembled, annotated and mastered by longtime Brummels’ aficionado Alec Palao, this major refurbishment of The Beau Brummels’ catalogue leaves no stone unturned. The original stereo album masters are accompanied by a comprehensive assortment of out- takes, alternate mixes and 45 RPM versions, and are further enhanced by rarities and unreleased demos drawn from the band’s own archives.

All the members of the Brummels also contribute to the instructive and heavily- illustrated history of the recordings, housed in a deluxe, handsomely appointed booklet.

I guess this renders the Rhino box redundant--presuming the mastering is good?

I'm also surprised there are "only" 24 previously unreleased tracks. I didn't realize that earlier issues had unearthed that much weird stuff...

 

I asked Alec about this and some mono mixes will remain unique to Magic Hollow.

Interesting. I wonder if that is by design (keep Magic Hollow necessary) or that the mono mixes were just deemed insignificant and they didn't want to exceed 8 CDs?

Thanks...Given that, in the UK, the royalty rates are determined by the number of CDs, I guess it makes sense to limit the number of CDs to keep the retail price under a certain value.

I'm in. But it would have been nice if it went all the way up to the reunion album and live recordings from the subsequent tour. Everything nice and tidy.

 

I will have to compare to the Sundazed San Fran sessions 3 CD set. Took a while to find that one at a decent price.

I like the sound of the Sundazed set and the Rhinos. I wonder how this will compare. I think that I have the Repetoire CDs of the 1st two albums and a Japanese '66 CD.

 

Everything should be included here.

Tempting, I must say. I just hope that it sounds as least as good as previous releases.

 

At one time I would have loved a set like this, but now I have so much Beau Brummels otherwise already... I guess if there was a single disc of the most critical but otherwise unavailable tracks, or maybe I've just gotten Brummeled out? I would've left '66 out myself.
