Awesome, thanks - that fixed it! Below is my Powerslave CD EAC report. This is for an EMI disc which says "Made In West Germany" on the CD as well as a 1984 copyright date. Catalog: CDP 7 48048 2 Matrix: B-6067 / CDP 7460452 A Track 1: Peak level 100.0 % Track 2: Peak level 100.0 % Track 3: Peak level 95.8 % Track 4: Peak level 100.0 % Track 5: Peak level 100.0 % Track 6: Peak level 100.0 % Track 7: Peak level 100.0 % Track 8: Peak level 100.0 %
Are you sure you don't mean a CDP 7 46045 2 catalog, similar to the matrix? This here appears to be your CD: http://www.maidencollector.com/details.asp?id=518 I couldn't find anywhere a CD with the catalog you posted: CDP 7 48048 2
Sorry - my mistake! You are correct, it's CDP 7 46045 2... my excuse is the poor lighting I had when I read it And the total CD time based on EAC is 50:58:30 Which is 50 minutes, 58 seconds and 3/10 of one second. And yes, that link appears to be the disc I have. The Japan black triangle of this CD goes for big money; it would be great if someone could post EAC numbers for the black triangle to see if there's cheaper alternatives with the same mastering.
I could do it tomorrow and give some real whacked out numbers. Coming up tonight unless someone beats me to it.

I also checked with my copy of the triangle. It seems its identical to the W.Germant pressing, which I had previously at one point and I remember it sounded great. I listened to my copy of the triangle yesterday and it sounds awesome. Does anyone have a UK made EMI and a Pastmasters II?
Here's a frequency comparison for Powerslave (2 Minutes to Midnight) between the WG EMI CD (identical to the Black Triangle CP32), the US Castle 2-CD (identical to the US Capitol CD) and the shared tracks on "The First Ten Years - Vol. 6" EP. There are clearly minor differences between these mastering, but they are rather small if you look at the scaling of the y-axis.
Looking for the levels of the UK made EMI and the Pastmasters before we move on to LaD. I know some people here also have the gold-face W.German CD
I don't think Powerslave on CD sounds good at all. Sounds cold and sterile to me. I sure wouldn't praise the sound quality of the CD, and I am quite certain that the original vinyl sounds miles better.
Not to threadcrap, but my fellow Maiden fans, you've got to experience Maiden on vinyl. My Maiden vinyl completely obliterates my 1st pressing CDs. The original CDs are worthwhile and are far superior to the CD remasters, but, for me, listening to the phenomenal sound of the lps renders the CD quality issue moot.
The W.German CD and the CP32 is the best I've heard of this album. You could describe the sound as sterile, but it packs a punch and has a good detail. It's also the least muddy of the classic Maiden albums. I bet the vinyl sounds great, but sadly most people here don't have turntables and honestly I wouldn't bother.
Yes, I know. I don't have any vinyl playback possibility. I have heard a needledrop of "Live After Death", and it is really good and quite a bit better than the best CD version. I would expect similar results for the other Iron Maiden albums. For "Powerslave", I am not 100% sure which version I like the best, but I am leaning towards the US Castle mastering because it sounds a little less aggressive to me.
You mean it is without a doubt your preference, right? Other people might have a different preference.
It is with out doubt the best sounding/mastering, and that has been proven by many Maiden fans IMO, and that is why they go for crazy prices i guess! They are the 'Holy Grail' of Maiden discs!!
The chart in this thread shows that the common EMI is the same sound/mastering. It probably goes for crazy prices due to being a collectible Japanese disc, rather than for its sound. Otherwise, why not go for a digitally identical disc at prices that aren't crazy.
It is a rare black triangle for collectors. I prefered the Pastmasters II CD when I A/B'd them (just out of curiosity, I don't own any Maiden albums). I don't know about the mastering and it could just be pressing differences.
Sorry, but nothing has been proven by anyone. There are many reasons that they go for high prices, and it is not necessarily sound quality only. It is possible it sounds a little better than the WG EMI CD (digitally identical but some pressing differences), but that will not make this a great sounding CD. I know from someone who's ears I trust that there is a better mastering of this title on CD available. It remains your opinion and probably the opinion of many others, but that does not make it a fact.
Opinions vary. I've mentioned this before in countless Maiden threads that my favorites (for TNOTB and POM) are actually the original U.K. pressings. To my ears they just sound closest to the vinyl I grew up with. And yes, I do own the Black Triangles, and no, they're not for sale
Oh, I'm sure the vinyl is quite better. I'm just comparing the Powerslave CD to say, Piece of Mind or Somewhere in Time - the drums and bass on Powerslave just pound, whereas Piece of Mind is very anemic. (The LP, though, nope.) (I hope it's OK that I keep bringing up the vinyl. Somewhere in Time on vinyl really surprised me. I have just an RCA record club copy but still, even on my piddly stuff, the bass and especially the bass drum are thunderous.)
Better than the Black Trangle and original EMI? what disc is that then, because i always thought these were the best there is?
