I got that. Sparkly sparkly sparkly banjo. I also have 'Doug Dillard's Banjo Album' which is recommended for that very metallic, Ralph-like banjo sound.
I found that a few years back at a record show. The pictures inside the booklet faked me out for who played on the album.
The picture is captioned: "The Original Gang of Four" which was Don Parmley, Doug Dillard, Byron Berline and David Lindley. On the album, of those four, only Dillard and Berline play. I was excited to hear Lindley on guitar.
Playing a CD now that I found this past weekend at a thrift store, Bluegrass Legends. A lot of it is live cuts, but has Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys (featuring Ricky Skaggs & Keith Whitley), The Carter Family, Charlie Monroe and Carl Story. It's on Blu Mountain records, and only paid $1.00 for it! This is the third time playing it all the way through, and it's got a lot of good stuff on it!
Gotta say, I'm really enjoying the four album Earl Scruggs Revue set I sent for. Reminds me a lot of The Byrds. Combination of lots of Dylan songs and Gary Scruggs' voice having a passing resemblance to Roger McGuinn, I suppose. Lots of good covers. I particularly like their stab at Pure Prairie League's Tears but most of them are strong, and, unlike Dennis 0675, I think the Scrugg Brothers' own material is highly decent too. The playing is top notch, of course, too. It may not be bluegrass but it's high end country rock.
Was just listening to Tony Rice doing Mule Skinner Blues good Lord how can one human be that talented ?
Any good bluegrass Christmas records out there? Had this record a long time ago. Loved the Doyle Lawson a cappella medley.
